Mitchell 300C

Post by ak-fish »

I just picked up a French made Mitchell 300C. I must be missing something: How does it differ from the standard 300? There is a bearing in the handle but everything else seems identical...

I think it's a needle bearing in the handle.

The Mitchell 300C spinning reels have so called 'needle' bearings in both the main gear shaft & the rotor instead of the porous bronze sleeve bearings in regular 300 models. These needle bearings are roller bearings in a plastic carrier, there are relatively few rollers & a lot of plastic filling the space between them. Most 300C Mitchells also have a roller line guide instead of the stationary carbide cone on most 300s.

There's also a later version that has the new body casting, raised lettering, diecast bail arm w/late bail design, & plastic lock nut handle. It has the same relationship to the later style 300.

There really isn't a bearing of any kind in the handles themselves.
