New grab, any ideas?

Post by Char_Mender »

Hi all. Recent pickup and seeing if any might know about it. Its unmarked and has differences from an Amateur. Not sure on this old timer. Appreciate any help. Thank you

Looks like a Meisselbach "Amateur" reel.

Hi Ron. Thanks, but not sure it is one. Differences than those in pics and unmarked. Very early one perhaps?

Hi Wrong99. I'm really thinking the handle original and this is not an Amateur.

I have never handled an Amateur, but from pics and old catalog drawings there are some differences.

Foot and spindle arm differ. Reel center spindle not pinned.

You remove mounting arm square nut and center screw comes out with spool from threaded arm.

You remove second square nut to remove screw from spool completely. The lever brake also differs and does not have a pronounced hook for your finger.

No markings or stamps anywhere on reel to denote Meisselbach manufacture.

It is very well made though. The foot being past buggered with is the only thing I'm not happy with.

I plan to fish it sometime.

Just my $0.02, but is it possible that is an Amateur spool with a homemade/replacement stand and foot? That is definitely a repair job on the foot and the rest looks like different metals or different ages. Maybe the square nuts were needed to make it all work. If it's high quality, that might be hard for the average Joe to have put together so I could be way off.

Hi, thanks for input. I suppose it could be, but the lack of markings and subtle spool differences make me wonder.

What does coincide with an Amateur spool would be the size, 3"X 1", which matches an Amateur #11.

Did any other manufacturers make these style reels? Copying has always gone on in everything, it seems.

Thanks again.
