Pflueger spools had square shafts like that which the pinion gear sat on. But the spool doesn't look like a Pflueger beyond that.

I agree with Brian, but have no idea beyond that as to what company's reel it belongs to. The answer to everything, of course, is Montague.

Someone else suggested Ocean City Panama? But I certainly dont have one of those to take apart and compare

Chris, No panama here either, but I dug some pics of a Balboa I reno'd an age ago..had to blow up regions, so pics not that great, but it's certainly thematic, relative to what's required of the spindle on your spool and the hole in which it engages:

I think the spools are exactly the same on the Balboa and Panama. John Elder's post is pretty definitive IMHO.
I wonder what became of the rest of the reel?
Maybe the owner upgraded to a 1 piece from a more modern OC in order to fish it with mono?
