Best book
OK I know this is a tuff one but if you were to have one book on reels what would it be ? I really don't care about the pretty pictures but something filled with info and maybe somewhat close on values. Or is this like lures and you need about evey book that was printed and than it's out dated by the time you thumb thru it. Mike

As a follow-up..Phil, you are always cuffing us up the side of the head to remind us that 80% of what we bring up here has previously been addressed in the Reel News. I know I don't have all the back issues by a long shot and i'm sure I'm not alone. What about putting together a compendium of all the back issues and offering it up for a decent price...or even as sets sold thru the orca store for each year...yes, we can buy the individual ones where available, but it would be better to be able to buy them all as a coordinated set...and certainly should be more economical for the end users. Where issues are missing, we could put them together using copies from someone's collection that has been with the org since the beginning. this, coupled with a good cross-referencing appendix, would certainly be invaluable to all the clubbers and newbies alike.

Right on target
John's right on target, I think. The breadth and depth of Reel News stories and research over the last decade has been tremendous. culling through all the back issues, grouping reels by type or era and republishing all that great work into a book would be a fantastic resource and could be a real "reel" treasure for ORCA members and for ORCA to publish for collectors all over.

Mike, it is worse than for lures. At least there are lure books that cover a wide range of companies.
So you could make do with one, or two, and cover a large portion of the normally found lures.
The few general reel books either are just price guides, or they have serious holes in their information. Karl White's book covers many reels, but leaves many out as well, and it also is not very realistic on values, and light on information.
To get a good library on reels is going to take a dozen or so books.
Lawson's Price Guide to Reels
Phil White's books
Graham Turner's Fishing Tackle a Collector's Guide
The Pfleuger Facts book
Steven Vernon's Kentucky Reel book
Jim Brown's a Treasury of Reels.
Al Mungers books
I am sure I am leaving out a dozen more. There is a book on Mitchell reels, the spinning reel book mentioned in a post above, several books on ABU reels and reels made in Sweden. Books on Hardy reels, and many others.

Richard & John,
Back issues of the "RN" is avaiable from Roger but there are a few early ones missing. I THINK I have all that are avaiable if I can find them all. Contact Roger and find out which ones he is missing.
That would be a good project for someone this winter while the snow is 10 ft deep.

OH, yeah, Mike...that would be a great read...it could be like a "Where's Waldo" for Reelites, trying to find the factoids among the mis-information
speaking of which, Brian points out that the RNs can already be purchased by year, with only a few missing...it would be nice to pull these out of someone's archive and see if we could make the whole set available to all.

Getting information is your best way to start a collection. You could start with Pfluegers. Buy the Pflueger Facts book just published by ORCA. Than after you make a few purchases, you will realize the importance of not buying junk, as most of us have done when we started on the ORCA trail.
Then get a Meisselbach book from Phil White before these are out of print. This should get you started the right way on quality reels. As you get more into the collecting, you will find several other good starter books. The K. White Vol 2 book gives you lots of photos, and is "generally" very helpful. If available the book written by Jim Madden on South bend reels would be also a great addition, but unless someone is willing to give up a copy, you may find it very hard to find.
So, altogether you need about the same amount of money it takes to get a set of golf clubs. But there is no green fees here at the help board. These 4 books are a mainstay in my bookcase. They are next to a photo of Elvis.
Good luck. Dale.

One thing we are all forgetting is that reels have more "variables" than lures. Enterprise Manufacturing never threw anything out. They just adapted to the next reel with parts available. Hence the problem trying to date or identify them. Next we have reels being made by the "big guys" for the trade companies. Parts are different but still fit... Lures on the otherhand were the same as much as could be. nothing is identical but are the same. hence we have the guides to guide us. Pick the picture that closely resembles it and you have a match, or do you? That's the joy in collecting. Trying to find the next big FIND! Enjoy it for what it is meant to be. A hobby...
