Bronson Privateer 300B

Post by Smitfla »

Calling all Bronson experts!
This is my first time posting photos and this was the only way I could figure out how to do it from my phone. Hopefully you can click on the links below to open up photos of the privateer 300B and box I'm trying to verify that it is a legitimate find. The box appears to be the exact same one that is in the Bronson saltwater reel section here. At least I hope it is. Thank you in advance for any input that any of you may have!
Chris

Looks legit to me. You somehow ended up with the actual box seen on the website. Small world and nice find.

Yep it's the Box allright , However I see no markings whatsoever on the Reel ????

Well that's certainly great to hear! Thank you for getting back to me! I'm not collecting to sell anything however it sure would be nice to know a rough value for the reel and box.
Do you have any idea of an approximate value?
Thank you!

Not all Bronson salt water reels were marked. I have no idea as far as value goes.

Thanks Harry. I was confused about that myself. It sure looks like the one noted in the saltwater Bronson section but I'm definitely curious why there are no markings! I took the real down completely all the way to the leather washers and I have to say it is a very impressive internal mechanism compared to the Ocean City and old Penn reels I've taken apart.

Thanks for the reply mark! It's still really cool to know that I have something that is somewhat rare! I'm just getting started so I guess I got lucky early!

Bronson's Salt Water Reel guts differed from Penn, O.C. and Pflueger all right and if you happen to have a pic of the guts on it I would like to see them just to know if they coincide with my Marked Reels of the early 30's.

Thanks for taking a look Harry. Curious to hear what you think! Here's a couple images from when I disassembled it prior to cleaning. Please excuse scribbling on my scratch pad and notes. The last image shows where I marked the order that the metal washers and leather washers went back in.

Chris,

You can upload photos directly to your posts from your device, rather than posting links to an outside host, by following these simple instructions. Thumbnails take up less space in the post and are enlargeable by clicking on them, and can also be enlarged a second time. Regular size photos can also be enlarged unless they're posted at their maximum size.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Just a friendly reminder that I am by no means an expert! Having said that... Based on what I have read so far about this reel in the saltwater Bronson section on the website it's my understanding that Coxe produced the auto mesh and drag for these reels. I believe they were only made from 1939 till 1941. Is it possible that the collaboration between Bronson and Coxe during this period is why the guts look like they were made by Coxe? Just a thought but again I'm no expert I'm just learning. Thank you for helping me decipher the history of this specific reel.

Thanks Tom I keep trying to do this on my phone in between doing other things and I'm not used to working from a phone. I'll start doing this on my laptop going forward so I don't run into these constant error messages I get because I'm typing with fat fingers!I'm not a millennial that lives his life through his phone so I really have no business trying to do this on anything but a computer!

You are correct. By 1939, Bronson owned Coxe and his auto-mesh design was used on most of the Bronson salt water reels.

Thanks Mark still trying to learn all this stuff! The history of these pre-war reels is extremely interesting to me and I can't read enough about it! I guess I'm just going to have to buy every book known to mankind about vintage reels! I will also have to install a reading light in the dog house as that will be where I will be reading all of said material if I don't take a break from these message boards for a minute and stop talking about old reels to my lovely wife!
