French CAP half bail reel
Today's estate sale find. Needs cleaning, but works.
My question is how to operate the bail to cast the line.
Now to find a vintage rod, and go fishing.

Nice find! Post a couple of photos so we can determine which version it is. To open the bail pull it sideways. To close it just start reeling like you would a full bail. Here's a photo with the bail open.

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Thanks, wish I knew how to post pictures, am PC challenged.
Passed on it Friday, thought the bail was broke.
Went back yesterday, and was surprised to see it was OK.
I believe this is a late 1940's model.
The side plates are flat, not domed, and the anti-reverse is a lever, not a button.
Now for the search for a good rod, and go fishing.

If the foot stem is straight from the main shaft tube to the bend up to the foot, it says "Made in France" in the flat area above the tube and behind that stem, has a pillared spool, non-planamatic gearing and has an oil port at the rear of the main shaft tube it would be from somewhere between 1949-1954.snubnose57 wrote:Thanks, wish I knew how to post pictures, am PC challenged.

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Well now have a rod for it. Spooled with line now.
My question is how to manipulate the line to cast.
When I open the bail, the line still rests on the bail roller.
Do you open the bail, and pull the line from behind the bail, to cast?
Just think I may be doing something wrong.

Sounds like you have the line on the wrong side of the roller .
When you pull down the bail the line should peel off just like any of the other Bailed Reels.

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Lay the line over your index finger prior to opening the bail sideways, i.e. flipping it out. The line guide should be down like the photo I posted and your index finger with the line should be up close to the rod. Then you cast it just like any other open face spinning reel.snubnose57 wrote:Well now have a rod for it. Spooled with line now.

You want to be sure and let the line go from your finger .

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Thanks, but no matter how I try, the line stays on the roller bearing. I have to open the bail, and pull the line around the bail to cast. The bail was bent when I got it, maybe that could be the problem.
I am sure this is something really simple, and somehow I am doing it wrong.

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Thread the line through your Fishing Rod Eyes with the Bale open or down and the line not touching anything on the bale . Then when you spin the handle the bale will pick up the line .
IF NOT then
You really need to find a way to post the picture of your rig so we can help .
If you can't load from your Trac fone find a buddy with a computer and see if they can get some pix loaded here .

Re: French CAP half bail reel
Yes, I put line on the reel with the bail open, just like a full bail reel.
Just, that no matter how I open the bail, the line stays on the roller, and will not move from that spot.
The technique with the bail on the bottom may work with more practice on my part.
Need to find a two year old to show me how to post pictures.
