I think some of us got lucky because Richard test drove another way to get the things to us, using a sprinkling of sacrificial lambs around the country... from what I can tell, the new way worked like a charm...even harvey got one with almost next day service. my guess is that things will improve markedly on the next round...eh, Richard?!

Waiting in Colorado
Gee, I feel a little like a 16 year old virgin. The anticipation is gonna make me go nuts.

The truth is out
Bill, I can't help with that virgin thing. You'll have to work that out yourself. But John is right about me sending a handful of the September issue out to a few members by 1st class mail, just to see how quickly it can get there. At this point I want to put the idea before the ORCA board. Switching from our current non-profit cheap rate mailing status to 1st class would be a considerable increase in the mailing cost (it would cost about $1.50 to mail the magazine 1st class to the 50 states). Would members be willing to pay a little more in dues to get the magazine delivered quickly and more reliably? Again, that's not my decision but would be up to the board to discuss and decide. But it is clear that would be the fastest route, although our current mailing status will improve, once I get my printing and mailing deadlines smoothed out.
So, to all our faithful Reel News readers who are still waiting for the September issue, please be patient. It should be there soon. And if you have any suggestions for Bill, send those directly to him.

Richard, just so there is no misconception by the readers of this message board...
1. The question of increasing the dues to pay for first class mailing was asked of the membership in a questionaire several years ago. The membership was not interested at that time. They wanted to spend the money for more information in the Reel News. That's what we did. Maybe today they are interested in faster service. The magazine has no dated material in it, so it seems immaterial to me, just as long as all the members get it in a timely manner.
2. About 50% of the copies of the Reel News were mailed by first class mail using our 13 cents non-profit rate when they were mailed from Nampa, Idaho. All copies that are sorted as to mixed states, which is every place where there are not 10 members with the same first three digits of the zip code, had their copies sorted with the first class mail because they all went to different states. Many were delivered in 2-4 days. Other than two notable exceptions the Reel News was usually delivered from the sticks of Idaho to the members in less than a week. I'm not sure what they do with bulk mail in Massachusetts, but if it was taken to the post office at the same time as Harvey's was, something is wrong with your bulk mail section of your post office.
3. If the members want their Reel News faster with no dues increase, you could reduce the size of the magazine and cut costs in that manner and ORCA could probably stand the difference.
4. There is a very small minority of the membership who read this message board and are even aware of the mailing date of the Reel News. There are a few members who read this board that would complain even if they received their copy three days after it was mailed by first class mail, if someone else got their copy in two days.
5. I am no longer on the Board of Directors of ORCA, but I believe that we would lose many members and sign up fewer new members if we went to $40 a year for dues.

And so . . .
I have to take exception tp Phil on this one - I don't believe a Reel Talk post will insure that there is no misconception by the readers of this message board. To the contrary, many of us can misconceptualize almost anything posted here!
Aside from that, I pretty much agree with his conclusions.

'Misconception'
I agree completely with all Phil has listed. I really am not complaining nor do I feel the need to increase dues to receive it faster. But I am always very greatful when I do get it. Slower is sometimes better in these things I have been told. A little anticipation can be good and make you really appreciate conception when it comes. If only I would not hear from my friends how early they got it, my anticipation of conception would not be so lustly fueled. Therefore, I wouldn't "misconception" if others would not boast of about there's. Oops Richard, I am back at 16 years old.

just a bad postal system!

Its here!
Reel News is here in Bronson, Michigan today Saturday 09.10.2005. So much anticipation and its read in an afternoon. Great issue but it still can't take the sting out of U of M losing to the Fighting Irish. My Dad and Brother have bragging rights for another year.
When the next issue?

Richard,
I agree with Phil. I don't have a pony in this show but bulk mailing is the way to go. Raising the dues just for a couple days or a week earlier delivery isn't the answer. Heck, when I was a kid, you had to walk two miles to and from the post office if you wanted your mail everyday. Make us suffer!
Harvey
PS: Did I mention that it was up hill both directions?
