Skeleton Fly Reel ID's Needed
Recently got these interesting skeleton fly reels from ORCA member Tom Eidson. Any thoughts on makers and age? The vertical reel has 4 large holes in the face side, is very sturdy, spool diam 2 11/16 x 13/16 inch wide. The second is a horizontal reel with 12 holes, very thin sheet metal, spool is 2 3/4 diam and 1 inch wide. thanks in advance, Bryce

Bryce, both are unAmerican-looking. The vertical one is basically a metal Nottingham, and such things were made in various countries. The sidemount is probably something made well after the Meisselbach patent lapsed. Reels with those simple thumb brakes show up all the time on ebay.

Bryce,
Sorry to say even a boxed example won't tell us much - the box for your 2nd reel has no maker name or address, simply "One Lucky Reel" - Ideal for Trout, Bass, Etc. The size and construction is not a perfect match(but there are a few similarities), but the larger of the two in my photo is from Bernard Goldweber - 1133 Broadway, NY, NY and labeled as an All Purpose Reel.

FYI: Goldweber lived in Bayonne but opened his Broadway cutlery store in NYC after WWII. He probably wasn't at that location for more than a couple of years.
