Passing of Gary Quick, Penn Author and Pioneer
Passing of Gary Quick, Penn Author and Pioneer
Sorry to relay the message that ORCA member and Reel News contributor, Gary Quick, passed away last Sunday. He, along with former Penn CEO David Martin and Bruce Davis, authored of the history of Penn Reels for Penn's 2005 catalog. Gary was a pioneer in research of the popular manufacturer and plays a big role in the information available to a new generation of reel collectors that grew up fishing with Penn tackle.

Got a spare reel stamped "Pflueger" or a Montague Imperial?

How very sad. As Brian noted, Gary was a reel research pioneer who studied the gear he used while fishing off Long Island. In addition to his well-known interest in Penn, he wrote many articles on Ocean City and other reels. Rest in peace, Gary.

ORCANS,
Gary was also an early authority on Langley reels, publishing articles in the REEL NEWS in the 1990s. He produced a self-published booklet describing Langley reels in great detail, which he graciously shared with Colby & I when we were working on the Langley book.
It was always a treat to talk to Gaaary on the phone, that "New Yawrk" accent was a delight. Calls were sometimes quite long, since Gary had many interests, don't EVEN get him started talking about barbed wire and it's origins!!
Rest in Peace, my friend,
Alan Baracco

Sad to find out about the passing of Gary Quick. He and I did many deals together. He had a never ending drive to be constantly researching something.
