Peck & Snyder reels and tackle

Post by Mike N »

I am interested in any research on Peck & Snyder.

It is my understanding that Andrew Peck and Irving Snyder started the Peck & Snyder Sporting Goods company in about 1866 at 124-128 Nassau Street in New York. We know they retailed, among many other sporting goods items, ball handle reels and metal baits with their name stamped on the tackle. I believe they were later acquired by the predecessor to sporting goods company, Spaulding.

My online research found a discussion about an 1886 Peck & Snyder catalog but we do not have one in the ORCA library. My search of Reel Talk topics reveals very cursory information.

Any help, especially copies of catalog pages of their reels and fishing tackle, would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike, check out the books here. The first
One has a relatively extensive list of their fishing tackle including the sort of reel you are seeking.

Wow, Paul. The clarity of those catalogs is top-notch. Thank you very much.

Peck & Co. opened @ 105 Nassau in 1866, specializing in base ball stuff. Washington I. Snyder also worked there.
Peck & Snyder, The New York City Base Ball & Sportsman's Emporium, was located @ 126 Nassau by 1870.
They opened a branch @ 11 Park Row about 1872. Dunno when it closed.
They had a branch @ 11 Beekman by 1892.
They seem to have had another branch at 1790 Broadway by 1893.
By 1894, Spalding occupied the 126 Nassau location.
Both Peck & Snyder and Spalding were located at 132 Nassau by 1895.
P&S was still @ 11 Beekman in 1896.
P&S was specializing in skates at 130 Nassau by 1898, and S was located @ 132 Nassau.
By 1915, P&S was making skates @ 132 Nassau, but neither Peck nor Snyder was an officer.
Peck ended up as an officer in a gypsum co., and Spalding was still operating at 126 Nassau in 1917.

The BH reel illustrations on pg 82/100 are intriguing.

I love the sporting outfits shown in the early catalog.

Thanks, Steve.

Don’t get me wrong, I love baseball. Both of my sons played college baseball. But I’m beginning to think this Peck & Snyder stuff is preserved only because they mass produced the first baseball cards, as opposed to anything related to fishing tackle.

Here is a Peck & Snyder reel (photo credit to Paul M from a 2014 thread) and a Peck & Snyder stamped metal spoon.

That brass reel is still in my collection. It is marked 3 under the foot.
