Pflueger or Montague?

Post by m3040c »

I am looking at a reel tagged Tarpon. it is rough also is marked Abercrombie & Fitch. It looks to be early 20th Century. I am not sure if this reel is a Pflueger or Montague. I feel someone here will know.

I think Montague, Mike, but early Pflueger were certainly similar. A Pfluegerite May see some signatures I don’t know.

I looked at the early 1900’s catalogs in the online library for A&I, Monty and Enterprise. Ignoring the handle/drag, this is the same as Montague. Pflueger foot/bridge Is different for this sort of reel.

Thanks guys. I felt it was a Montague but was kind of hoping it could be a Pflueger. I know both makers used the Tarpon name and Pflueger made their Tarpon reel in a 500 yard size between 1902 and around 1913. The stand does suggest a Montague. I did not think Montague used the Rabbeth drag but I guess that is aftermarket and could have been installed on either brand. Sure wish someone had one or both in their collection and could post pictures. The seller wants $100 for it, I felt $50 was more right. The deal is pending. Thanks for the opinions.

Now just imagine it if John was to do his magic on it. It would be a sweet-looking reel.

The straight and square-ended foot and mounting not Pflueger. Other things too. But i know even less about Montague. Cool John-aka Deke-has a mean eye.

I pulled it apart to look closer. The screws are not usual pflueger screws for the period and are different front, back and the main sprocket. The machining is not typical pflueger either.

The spool is not a usual pflueger either. So maybe Montague with the williams added.

Here's a pic from a circa 1920 Montague catalog page.

Looks like the same reel I have. Only much better condition. It is Montague

I wonder if the main gear has a Montague witness mark as Don Champion identified on the smaller reels. Pflueger didn’t mark their gear with a witness mark.
( Edit: I got this backwards- Pflueger used the registry mark on their gears)

I now own the Montague I pictured at the beginning of this post. It is a disaster but I will try to save it. Probably won't get to it for awhile. I am stupid busy lately. All work and no play. The expect the reel will have witness marks, it is really old. I will photo them if I find them. Do you have an example of what I should look for?

I got it backwards. Pflueger gears had “registry” marks.

"I got it backwards. Pflueger gears had “registry” marks."

I thought you were referring to the stamped numbers used to keep the parts matched to a particular reel. Now I see.
