Julius Vom Hofe (JVH) - the company and his sons company - sold many, many unmarked reels for the trade. The number under the foot is a “size”. There were probably 5 sizes of that reel with No. 3 being the middle capacity. The hole in the foot (along with its proportion and position) is a big clue that it is a JVH. Also, the styling of the rubber sides with raised pillars and that sort of handle are JVH characteristics. There are reference materials about JVH and related reels in the ORCA online library and for sale in the online store plus a bunch of information sprinkled across this message board and ORCA website.
The numbers on the foot of JVH reels indicate the diameter of the reel. 4 is 2 1/8" diam, 3 1/2 is 2 1/4" diam., 3 is 2 1/2" diam., 2 is 2 3/4" diam., 1 is 3" diam., 1/0 is 3 1/8" diam., 2/0 is 3 3/8" diam. Your reel is model 264 as listed in 1915 JVH catalog. All of this model reels are model numbers 264, 263 1/2, 263, etc.
Thank you to both of you for helping me out here. I think I am going to be spending more time in the forum and the ORCA website. Just getting started collecting and I am really enjoying learning about all the reels out there that are old.
MichaelTM welcome to the world of old reels! Be sure to look for the list of past articles published in the Reel News which is our club gazette published about every other month. Club members get a subscription to the Reel News and free access to ORCA's extensive online library.
The stamping on these reels is very light and typically at the top of the face plate. The largest of these three has no marking but i wouldn’t swear it never had one. The other two are marked, but The little guy on right was the only one i could photograph well enough to see it.
