A basic American Reel Company multiplier on which somebody went to the trouble of relocating the crank from the center to the 4 o'clock position. They filled in the center hole with solder. I wonder what their motivation was in performing this bit of surgery? Maybe just to reduce the multiplication?

The reel started life as a four-gear multiplier with an 8x or 10x gear ratio (depended on reel size). Maybe one of the intermediate gears was damaged, and the owner salvaged the reel this way. Or maybe he thought the retrieve was too fast.
