Bruce Boyden has died

Post by Richard Lodge »

Bruce Boyden, a longtime ORCA member from Rhode Island who wrote the definitive article on the Ashaway Line and Twine Co. and OTCO reels in the current (July) issue of The Reel News, died a few days ago after a long battle with cancer. I was glad I was able to have a few conversations with Bruce in the past couple of months as he pulled together all the Ashaway research he had done over many years to write the article for the magazine.

So sorry to hear this.

I met Bruce at the very first Northeast Antique Anglers show in 1981 (might have been '82) and still have the item I bought from him that day (picture below). Over the years I have thought of him every time I've looked at it. Bruce had a great eye for smalls and I have several pieces in my collection that came from him. He was a prime influence in my aspirations as a collector.

Bruce took care of his friends. If he found something he knew one of his buddies was looking for, or something he thought would suit their collection, he would get in touch.

I always enjoyed his correspondence, our calls, catching up with him at tackle shows and at the Brimfield antique show. Bruce was a fountain of knowledge and always welcomed my many questions when I was green and just getting started.

Bruce will be missed.

Dean.
