H-I Grimsby & Branson Peterborough reels

Post by Paul M »

A couple of Canadian collector friends helped me add these Ontario made reels to my Canadian reel collection.
In particular, this Branson combo from Peterborough is a jewel. I have been waiting since March to receive it. Grimsby marked H-I reels have eluded me for years. What a great way to start my Canadian Thanksgiving weekend!

Nice adds, Paul! I particularly love that machined surface on the baitcaster! For some reason, i keep blanking on what we decided to call that process!

In case anyone is wondering, the National Sportsman reel was made by the Horrocks-Ibbotson Co. of Canada Ltd. in Grimsby, Ontario which is about halfway between Buffalo, NY and Toronto, Canada. The company was there from 1933-1941 until the factory burned to the ground. While the reel cage and spool look like injection molded plastic they were both turned from a solid block of bakelite, verified with the Simichrome smear test.
