I picked up an 1895 Akron, in... what looks like nearly new condition. It's not an old one, the box it came in is copyrighted 1965. It casts beautifully, right out of the box, although I'll be lubing the important parts ASAP.
Question is: The star drag does not seem to do anything, add any pressure to the outgoing line. What parts might need replacing, if that's what it is. I suppose I should take it down before asking this question; For all I know there are missing washers.

Great Article on Pflueger Maintenance!

Includes photographic schematic. Start drag included.
Parts of mine appear to be frozen, due to aluminum corrosion. Odd bc the reel appears virtually new. Looks like the handle got wet (saltwater?). Tried Liquid Wrench to no avail. Now soaking in a rust remover. Not sure it's penetrating though. Might have to go without a functional drag on the reel. No deal breaker for freshwater bass fishing, but I am curious just how it works.

Paul, a ultrasonic cleaner will go wonders with stuck stuff. Also Coca-Cola does a good job. Not sure what it would do to the aluminum.

Thanks, Bruce. Not sure I'll be investing in an US cleaner -yet. My wife would really wonder where I'm headed.

Re: Akron 1895 Drag
Well, until I go US I suppose, the drag is fused. AOK, freespool works, casts well, and I have a good thumb drag.
