I am a big college football fan and tonight is the national championship. But my new Howard Fortune Kentucky reel collection book arrived today. I thought I would just read a few pages and the next thing I knew, I missed the first half!

Former ORCA President Betty Barr’s lengthy interview of Howard asks all the questions true collectors want to know the answers to: what’s your favorite reel in that great collection? how did you get started? how did you find those reels? what were the old timers like? And on and on. It’s so interesting.

Well done, Dr. Barr and Dr. Todd! Thanks from all of us (old) reel collectors.

Mike, you give me way too much credit. The idea for the interview of Howard was initiated by Roger and Doug Carpenter who informed me that I needed something to do. After getting permission from Howard, I hired videographer Joanna Hay, contacted Bill Hinkebein who split the cost with Don and me, and set a date. Bill brought Art Lander, noted Kentucky Sports writer, along. I sent questions to Todd Larson, Doug Carpenter and a few other collectors from ORCA and created a list that I used to generate questions. Howard was patient and sat for hours though the interview. It was a memorable experience. I owe Roger and Doug a thank you for the great idea. And thanks to Bill and Todd, we have the book.
