I thought this was just a standard Model 1847 GE reel, but the green dot on the spring release caught my eye. Flipping it over I found a quick release tab where the spindle nut usually is.
Has anyone else seen this modification? I’m not aware of any patent applications for the device, and guess it is a factory prototype. Found in Kalamazoo at an estate sale.

If it has this etching on the side I would say it's a DIY modification.

To me the finish scratches on the opposite side of the tab are the dead giveaway, but then I'm pretty skeptical of prototype terminology any time something different or unique shows up. IMHO that term is way over used.

Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

I get where you’re coming from, but I should have included in the information that there were two of these reels, and one was attached to a 1945 Shakespeare experimental Wonderod which was marked under the clear fiberglass “Experimental rod #10” and the date.
