Who Made Me?

Post by reeltackle »

OK, this one is not in my Wheelhouse. The only marking is the - 80 - on the foot.

I'll guess Kopf.

Compare the cap, foot, knob and handle screw to the one seen at the top of page 11 here -

Thanks Dean,

I believe you solved the riddle. Lots of similar characteristics, enough to give it a name.

John, I’m sure that making a knob like that is not beyond your skill set.

One salient feature of Kopf reels is that the feet of this style usually had concave surfaces between the "pseudopillars." Malleson reels with similar feet had flat surfaces in the middle. In addition, Malleson pseudopillars were frequently filed flat on the undersides. It's helpful to show details of the reel feet when trying to ID makers.

Ahhhhhh Mr. Pie, the reel has concave surfaces and round, non-filed flat pillars on the underside, more proof of the Kopf provenance.
As always my dear Pie, I can rely on your expertise.

I've always found Kopf to be a very interesting maker. Like JVH, he made everything from cheap-and-cheesy reels to truly high-grade reels, like that one.

Couldn't agree more, Dean! "At least some of his reels were of sufficient quality that they qualify for that group of unmarked New York reels that are frequently, and erroneously, attributed by collectors to one of the Vom Hofes, Malleson, or almost any other well-known maker but Kopf himself."
