cool-thumb USA I recently bought a bait caster that needs a tail bearing cap or even a front cap as this one fits either end, reel is made in Sweden, marked RAINBOW 888 then Link0PING made in Sweden Pat. pendingblack in color has a leaver on head plate to ingauge-disingage the pinion gear, no level wind however the foot goes back and forth, the internal gear has a grove the pin on the mane gear fits into. The end caps come off with knerald nobs like a 5000 garcia has, only this reel has them on both ends. the foot has a serated knob that works on a traeded shaft( dont know what it does unless something is missing! I could also use a original handle , i am using a red Garcia handle on it at present. For once I am stumped! HELP please! Your ohio Conection On Lake Erie Col. M. Sure, Swim. Rainbow is not-at-all unknown. Quite popular among collectors and enthusiasts, especially your pivoting-foot levelwind model. The company isn't around anymore (passed thru Linköping just the other day; would've stopped if it were) but the reels sure are.
Do you have Dan Skupien's book on Reels of Sweden? It's probably in there. The white-bearded guy inside the front cover (aka Eko-Lasse, just up the road a ways) has some he loaned out for photographic purposes. IIRC there were a couple at the ABU museum too.
They had several patents in Sweden, that pivot foot among them. Don't have the number offhand; it's in my notes somewhere. Spare parts? Not sure.
cool-thumb USA thanks DOC. I still would like to know what that knurled wheel does on the foot besides going back and forth on the travis screw? It dosent seem to make any difference which side the wheel is, the foot only travels so far right or left, I have learned the handle is a single crank not two knobs! As for now mine will have a regular reed ambasador two knobs until I ever find a corect one. Next is finding a proper fitting end cap adj, Then I will go fishing with it,I like the way you fasten the line , just tie a knot and slip it into the spool! I already have it mounted on a rod that has eliptic guides, ie. the inside of each guide is oval, and has some very good distance casting! Again thanks for the pic site came in handy! Haven't had time to really get into it, but as far as I can understand the knurled knob is a type of fine tuning, allowing the levelwind mechanism to put more line on either the left side or right side of the spool. (umm, okay... for thumbing while casting, I guess?)
Milt, I had a Rainbow once and enjoyed "playing" with it. The rotating foot is meant to be the level wind. The knurled knob adjusts or fine tunes the back and forth movement. Each reel spool may be slighly different, and line size may be a factor also so that the back/forth movement may need centering from time to time. Rotate the knob and watch how it changes the center of the back/forth movement. It's very subtle. It's a clever idea, but I didn't enjoy the thing moving in my palm. It kind of felt alive. Jim
cool-thumb USA Yup , after mounting on the rod, I moved it both ways , hey! it centered, moved por and starboard now all in need is a bearing cap on the tail plate side and prsto! On that eliptic guide rod I have it on , well all I can say is LOOK OUT BASS! You would think that with a level wind like we know them and been patened in 1860 that they would have used the easy way, a leval wind up front! Jim ? alive? Did you ever think that you caught a big BLUE GILL and its tugging moved the reel? anyway i cannot wait untill I get this thing going and no, I dont palm a reel , thats what they put a handle on the rod for! and drag caps on the reel , hmmmm! Its a darn interesting reel to say the least, and very easy to take apart and clean and lube and put back together! Your Ohio Conection on Lake ERIE Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG
