Thanks to a long-time ORCA member, today I acquired my 6th Orvis rod tube, which is by far my earliest with its original interior lid label. Here are a half dozen original Orvis wooden rod tubes circa 1880-1900 that are in my collection. My pre-1900 Orvis catalogs mention that each of their bamboo rods came in one, painted the color of “russet leather.” Some round lids are hinged with hook latches and then a transition was made to screw-on caps. I am in the process of convincing another Orvis collector to collaborate with me on an article on this esoteric topic.
