Made by Albert Smith Birmingham, never seen that size before or the horseshoe back.
Nice find.

Hi Stefan - I was watching that reel in the auction as well and it's interesting to find out who made it. How did you identify it? What elements tell you that Albert Smith Birmingham made it? And is it Albert Smith of Birmingham or is B'ham his last name? Thanks. Richard

Hi Richard, I thought it was Heaton as I have had something similar and I saw an Albert Smith catalogue with it in a few years back.
They were actually based in Redditch and Heatons I believe supplied them with components.

Stephan, thank you for your input. I just did a quick search with not much as far as results. I will look deeper in the web, any suggestions would be appreciated. It’s one of those reels you just want to hold in you hand. Thank you again.

That's a wonderful diminutive reel that I hadn't seen before. For such a small reel, it looks to be very robust.

I agree it looks like such a tactile thing.
If you google
alberts smith fishing tackle
You will see a few catalogues for sale on various sites with a couple of images of the directors.

I bought this reel on e-bay from a dealer in England about eight years ago just because it looked so cool, so different, so well made and it was so tiny. The dealer did not know who made it and in my eight years of ownership, prior to selling it to you, I was unable to find out who made it. I wish you better luck than I had sleuthing out the maker and if you do find out who made it, I hope it has a great pedigree.

Ed, I didn’t put two and two together that the reel came from you. Thank you, always a pleasure getting something in the mail from you.

I don't think so, ours is plain old Albert no middle name.
