PENN early SEAFORD
PENN early SEAFORD
More luck finding early PENN reels. Out of hundreds of mostly junky plastic spinning reels I found an early PENN SEAFORD reel! I was amazed to find the SEAFORD in the 1933 PENN catalog as 1 of the 1st 4 models. It had a mismatched spool & bearing, making the reel useless & might have been responsible for preserving it. Cleaned up well & I had a long later version of the bearing, now it works like new. Also found a restorable 1st edition of the PENN Spinfisher 700 w/odd curved painted diecast handle.
Still looking for early PENNs to salvage, the octogenarian I got these from says he has more PENNs somewhere & a bunch of Mitchells he could not find.
Goes nicely w/the BAYHEAD I found recently, but no scene etched into the sideplate. Have my old PENN 155 w/scene coming from my folk's house, to go w/4 other 155's w/o scenes.

Sorry, was a bit of a film photographer, but burned out on it & have not embraced the digital age yet. Not sure if I've ever taken a photo of a reel, rarely ever took photos of fish. Besides, when talking about these early PENN reels they tend to look like peas in a pod, unless you focus on the small details. My time & money goes into finding & refurbishing reels mostly. I'd sooner have 20 antique reels than a digital camera. Part of the lack of interest is that all I can get is dial up internet service.

Your Seaford if 250yd was
model 70 from 1933 til 1941
model 75 300 yd from 33 -41
model 71 100 yd from 35-38
model 72 150 yd from 35-41
If yours is from 1933 it should have three pillers & smooth click not waffle
Also first model 700 should have green non foldable handle.
would be intrested in knowing if your Seaford has the smooth click Gary Quick myself and a couple of other Penn guys are trying to keep track of how many like the F are around.

Thanks, I'd thought the early PENNs had the waffle pattern on the clicker button like this one. Its a shame PENN did not show a photo of the backside of the F & K. Reel also has the 4 paired posts, but has the old style label & hex handle nut. This SEAFORD is also a 250 yards size reel.
I'm still hoping to find an F 'style' PENN like the #14 or #15. Believe me, I have my eyes peeled for any 3 post Bakelite PENN.
Can you tell me anything about the scenes engraved into later sideplates?
Wouldn't a book of copies of the 1st dozen or so PENN catalogs, or a smattering of the old series of catalogs, before they went to the cheap pulpies be nice? Just that, reproductions of the catalogs & whatever documents are around, plus a small history would make a fine book.
