I know this is a reel site but I have a problem that needs attention. I recently bought an old compass made in Rochester,New York. Patented April 20,1915. Made by "Taylor". Inscribed USANITE, ENG DEPT, U S A 1918. The previous owner wrapped it in a rubber band that has since dried, cracked and stuck to it's side. Also looks like it was in water, has light coat of rust on it. Appears to be nickle plated over brass and copper. HOW WOULD I CLEAN THIS without damaging the finish. Thanks for any input.

You may want to try using GOO GONE to remove the old rubber. I use GOO GONE to remove sticky stuff that comes from the glue in labels. This cleans glue up pretty good. You can get at Walmart. If that don't work, I would try Baby Oil. Depends on if rubber is natural or synthetic.
For the light rust, try BLUE & RUST REMOVER. You can get a small bottle at your local Walmart in the Gun Section. I have used this on some reels, but it does not remove heavy rust. Does not harm base metal or finish on reels that I have worked on.
