Windshield Wiper Style Reel Patent

Post by reeltackle »

This original US patent, issued in January of 1947 for a windshield wiper style level-wind mechanism, found its way to my door and I can't seem to find the reel (if it was ever made) that Louis Tschus of Columbus Ohio designed and might have built. The mechanism seems to work somewhat like the Heddon 4-15 and 4-18 reels in that its level-wind arm has a similar sweep of motion only the gearing that moves the arm is quite a bit more complicated.

Does anyone know of a reel that this mechanism might have been incorporated into?

Mr. Pie, I read your splendid level-wind article that mentioned Tschus but no mention of a reel that incorporated his design? Have you any info on Tschus reels? Trying to find out anything about Tschus is becoming a real pain in the tuchus.

As cool as original patents are I am not married to this one. Is it of any special interest to anyone?

When the patent was granted, Tschus was an employed car repairman, unmarried and living with his mother. IMHO, we will never see examples of the vast majority of patented reels. Though it's likely that virtually all inventors made some attempt to get their inventions to market, most probably never made it. Many reels that did probably were made in small numbers and didn't catch on. The few that might have been sold probably ended up in the next wartime metals drive.

Even when reels came to the market, many were simplified, redesigned, or whatever by the manufacturer so that the marketed reels bore little resemblance to the patent designs.

Thank you for the info Mr. Pie, as always you are a fountain of knowledge and a true ORCA treasure. Being a student of level-windology would you like for me to send you the original patent?

All the same, I hope the prototype or some iteration of Mr. Tschus's reel shows up some day.

What a lovely little gizmo. All that marvelous mechanical wondery, just to wiggle a little arm. I love it!

would you like for me to send you the original patent?
Anon, old friend, thank you for your very kind offer, but I have to pass. There probably are folks out there who collect original patents or who would like to, and I'm too old to start another collection. It should go to some young'un who can appreciate it.

Here's another you might like, Dr. Rob!

The reel described certainly has a lot of similarities to this reel which was found in FL a few years ago:
