Old Reel Magazine Ads

Post by Terry Battisti »

Hi Everyone,

I recently joined ORCA after a few years lurking in the shadows. After perusing the site the last couple days in the Members Only section, I noticed that there is no page dedicated to the old magazine ads for rod/reel companies (or at least I haven't been able to find one). I own/run a website called the Bass Fishing Archives and I collect old magazines in order to track the history of the sport.

One of the things I do on the site is scan old magazines for the ads and then I write an article based on those ads. If there is any interest, I would gladly give any rod/reel ads I come across to ORCA to set up a page of ads. I scan in color and at 300 dpi resolution so you can read the fine print. I scan in color so the patina of these old paper ads is retained.

Let me know if there is any interest in this. It's a way that I can contribute to this great site and organization.

Sincerely,

Terry Battisti

Terry, talk to Bill about old ads. He did a whole book based on them as a source for assorted tidbits about reels and makers!

Hi John,

I own all three of Bill's books, Deconstructing Old Ads. They are a wealth of info for sure! In fact, in his last volume he placed in it what we think is the first ABU ad from 1954 that I found in an old The Fisherman magazine back in 2013.

Welcome Terry! Your skills would lend themselves also to our Library. I can see an entire library category just on magazine advertisements. We would love to have you on the library team. If you haven't yet checked out the new library interface, please go to the Members Only area on Orcaonline and check it out. We could set you up to upload files to the library. There are particular library naming and scanning standards we use, and we could get you up to speed.

David Lehmann is the Librarian and could facilitate.

Obviously, your articles on any ads are also welcome on Reel News.

Looking forward to seeing more from you!

Thank you Eric! I look forward to helping where I can!

kyreels,

Sign me up for the library team! LOL. As for my articles, I feel okay about writing stuff on reels from the late 60s through the 80s concentrating on ABU, Lew's, Shimano, and Daiwa but I'm not sure that that's what this group wants. IMO, we should start documenting it all now so it's fresh in our minds and the ads are still plentiful.

Let me know what I can do!

Terry

Terry,

I personally love old outdoors magazines and tackle advertising. There’s so much information yet to be discovered and shared between tackle collectors.

Thx for posting.

Shimano and Diawa are our among the most frequently searched for items. These reels are becoming more sought after and increasingly rare. Your insights will be appreciated and read by members.

kyreels,

Well, I just spent a good bit of time going through the library and WOW, that is one heck of a collection of information. Duly impressed! I see some holes I can already fill in for you. For example, I have the first Shimano Catalog from 1978/79. I actually wrote this up on my site earlier this year and posted the entire catalog. You can see it here:

https://bass-archives.com/introducing-shimano-1978-79/

There's more but this is just an example. And of course, I have a huge selection of reel ads to add to the library too. Should I contact David Lehmann or is there another avenue I should pursue?

Welcome Terry. As an avid bass fisher I’m well aware of your writing. So nice to have you and your expertise here. As we all get progressively older, what counts as “old reels” sneaks up on us. I still regularly use my “old” 1980’s tackle, and have even added to that “collection” some. Such additions to the ORCA library would be most welcome.

I relatively recently did some scrounging up of info on the first magnetic (in modern bass) reels, to provide some historical perspective on Shimano Bantams and ABU Ultra Mags as I refurbished some, posted on Alan Tani’s reel repair site.

A history of bass fishing tackle would be most welcome here in my mind and would likely expand interest in ORCA.

Cheers, Paul

Paul, Thank you for the warm welcome and for the kind words. Yes, I agree with you that "old" sneaks up on us quicker than we'd like to think. Last time I looked I was a snot-nosed brat working at a tackle store at the age of 14. Now I'm a 59-year-old guy just trying to learn as much as I can about a sport that has permeated my soul since childhood.

Thank you for the lead on your piece on Alan's site. I'll have to check that out.

David Lehmann and I have already started working on the ad library and I think it's safe to say we're excited about it and hope everyone else is too. We're going to keep it "reel related" in order to keep with the theme of the site.

Thanks again Paul and I look forward to meeting you some day.

Thanks, Terry.
I'll save you some looking, although I doubt there's anything you don't already know here:
ABU Ultra Mags:
https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,36 ... #msg439797
Shimano Bantam Mags:
https://alantani.com/index.php/topic,36169.0.html

Also, Michael Folkes contacted me about the UW video of LMB I've collected for my YT channel, "The Nature of Fishing", for possible use in the History of Sportfishing series. I said AOK, as long as I retain rights to use the clips for my channel's purposes in the future. I have at least one more documentary on LMB to get out, if I can cram it all into one doc. I see you are heading up the LMB fishing episodes in the series. They got the right man for the job. Can't wait to see them.

Paul, thank for the links. I went looking on Alan's site and couldn't find them. This will save me some time. :-)

Awesome you're going to have some things in the documentary. Yeah, I'm responsible for the two bass chapters. It was a tough nut trying to cover 140 years of history in less than two hours. Some things had to be left out but I feel fairly confident we covered all the really important aspects.

Thank you Paul, I hope it meets everyone's expectations.
