Does anyone know what Action “U” is on an old Ugly stik?

Post by Retroman83 »

I have my eye on this old Ugly but the seller and I can’t definitively determine its power. I’ve owned several of these rods and I’ve never seen U as an action. It’s definitely not Ultra light. The seller claims it feels like upper medium. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ugly? Or...bends into a U? :D

I Googled the BC1100's and the ones I saw were all 5'6" to 6' medium power casting rods.

Shakespeare catalogs in the late '70s & early '80s identified "U" Actions as "Universal". Ultra Lights were "UL". "M" was Medium.

Wow, thank you. I’m guessing Universal was heavier than medium? 🤔

“Universal” -not terribly helpful description. I saw one described as having power but a light tip, perhaps for casting lighter weights? Best guess.

A deeper dive into Shakespeare catalogs from that time frame might explain how their action designations work. There are plenty of timely examples in the Harvey Garrison Library to look through. I didn't dive in that deep.
