Below are a few items I've added to my store, including some very nice rods and reels. For more information and pictures, go to my store here: https://www.vintageanglers.com/store.
1. W&M Granger Special 8040 Bamboo Fly Rod, 8’, 4 wt., 3/2, $575
Considered perhaps Granger’s best taper, this 8’ fly rod is ready to go! Weighing 4 oz., it has the original tube and bag. All sections are the original length. One tip has a scarf repair by the expert Granger repairman Scott Whitman, although for the life of me I can’t tell which tip. But it was scarfed at the first guide down from the tiptop and is now invisible and functional enough for a lifetime of fishing. The varnish is perfect. One tip and the mid-section have slight sets, and the cork has a very slight ridging, but this rod will not disappoint. A very nice smaller dry fly rod!
2. Pahl Bamboo Fly Rod, 7.5’, 5 wt., 3/2, $375
This custom rod was made by Mike Pahl (Copperjohn) for me a few years ago and used very lightly. It comes with a carbon fiber tube and canvas bag. The bamboo is beautifully flamed and it has a pretty burl wood reel seat with double locking bands. The ferrule fit is good and the cork handle still has that velvety new feel. It has a fast action and is a perfect small dry fly rod. The varnish is perfect except for a couple of small hook dings.
3. Lancewood Travel Fly Rod, $145
This unmarked 19th century travel rod measures 9’ 10” long and weighs 9.5 oz. It is a 5-piece rod with two tips with a different style of tip tops on each. All pieces are of equal length except the 4th piece, which is 2” short (so it probably was a 10’ rod originally). It has been refinished and is completely usable today, with that slow willowy action that 19th century wood rods are known for. It has a very nice rattan grip with thread between the windings for a better grip. It also has a nickel silver reel seat with sliding band. The ferrule fit is good.
4. Pflueger #1392 Medalist Fly Reel, $175
This rare RHW reel from the 1930s has the early birdcage spool and 93% of its original finish. Much better condition than they are usually found in, it has a strong click and smooth operation.
5. Pflueger #1495 and 1496 ½ fly reels in custom presentation box, $250
Here is a pretty set of rare ringer reels in a beautiful, felt-lined custom cedar presentation box! The #1495 has 99% of its finish and is circa 1938. The #1496 ½ reel has about 92% of its finish and is circa 1940. Both reels are mechanically in very good condition and very smooth operating.
6. Edwards #60 Aluminum Fly Reel, $45
Reel is 3 5/8” in diameter and 7/8” thick. It has an on/off click button and strong click. It weighs 4.2 oz. The box has some water damage but is intact. Probably from the 1950’s.
7. Mepps Super Meca Spinning Reel, $89
This was the top-of-the-line spinning reel back in the day (before 1970). It has seen extremely light use and is mechanically perfect. It has a unique foldable reel seat stem, removable handle, an adjustable drag, and 99% of its finish. It weighs 14 oz. so it is a rather large reel.
8. Allcock Nottingham Wood Reel, $115
This wooden Nottingham reel is in about as good a condition as they come. Made by S. Allcock of Redditch, England, it has an adjustable drag (unusual in this type of reel) and measures 4” in diameter and 2” thick. It has an on/off click button and a strong click.
9. Zhu Silk Fly Line, DT4, 7 meters, $60
New line in box with its can of dressing and pad applicator. It has a braided loop on one end of the line. Ready to go!
