Need Help with Pflueger Progress Fly Reel Research

Post by Kevin McJunkin »

I’m working on an article for the Reel News about the evolution of Pflueger Progress fly reels, both the raised pillar and round frame versions.

If you have any early boxed reels, or any boxed Progress reels for that matter, I would like to enter information about them into a spreadsheet I am compiling. The easiest thing might be for you to call me so that we can discuss the specific characteristics of the reel and box. My email and phone contact info is in the ORCA member directory.

Also, has anyone seen a raised pillar Pflueger Progress without the Bulldog trademark (I have seen two)? Allegedly, Pflueger made unmarked RP Progress trade reels but I have yet to see one - have you?

I printed out many of the Pflueger catalog excerpts from the ORCA library (an outstanding resource!) but am still missing some. Do you have any of these catalogs that have not been entered yet into the ORCA database? I am attempting to collect all the catalog excerpts for the Progress reels between 1916-1968. I still need the following, if they were even printed:

1917
1918
1920
1921
1922
1930
1931
1932
1935
1942-47 (Wayne Ruby and others state that these may not have been printed due to the war)
1949
1950
1951
1953
1960

Any help you could give me would be most appreciated and I would, of course, credit you in the article.

Sincerely,
Kevin McJunkin

P.S. Here's a recent field find. I believe this reel, an 1183 60 yd gunmetal model, dates from the mid to late 1930's based on the "Made in U.S.A." stamping and the enameled wooden knob. Pflueger called it "rubberoid" in their catalogs.
