Can anyone advise on the best way to remove sticker glue from hard rubber side plates? It appears there were price tags on these reels at some point which left their glue on the surface when removed. It appears to have been there for quite some time. On the tail plate of the smaller, 60 yard, reel there is also some unknown thin, hard, black material on the surface I'd like to remove. This material was also on the bearing cap and metal rim; in those locations I was able to chip it off with a fingernail, but it is thinner on the rubber.
Ok, thanks, Ron and John. I searched the forum but saw nothing on the subject of glue removal and I haven't messed with hard rubber before. I'll try the alcohol on the the glue and some 40 grit on the other stuff. J/K, I'll try some 1000 grit wet sanding to try to bring that stuff on the back of the 60 down. I had a Hawkeye 60 that I picked up at a flea market in the 80s for $10 that needed nothing so I never had to deal with the material. Sadly, that reel was stolen along with many others, a half dozen bamboo rods, and several more modern rods.
Good luck! Another trick to try, if the stuff is above the surface is to use a razor blade as a scraper. Try that before the sanding and see if you can get a head start on it!

Be careful with alcohol on hard rubber. It can turn the color from black to brown.
Test an area like on the inside near the foot.
Better yet try WD-40. It won’t discolor the surface and might soften the residue.
Before you try sanding, scraping or using alcohol. Try to remove the glue residue try "Goo Gone". Put a small amount on a soft cotton cloth and rub it on the glue residue. Try it first on an inconspicuous spot to be sure the color of the hard rubber doesn't change. I don't believe that it will.
Thanks, Ray. I thought of Goo Gone but I wanted to see if I could get a consensus on the "right way" on hard rubber before I tried it. I got a little busy with other things but I'm going to try dabbing a spot on the inside to see what happens when I can get back to it. I appreciate the input and message.
