Hello all,
I hope you are well.
Some time ago I bought a "Nor-vise" and Nor-vise Bobbin set.
The vise is different in design to any other Nor-Vise I have ever seen, and after extensive research on the internet, I am still none the wiser as to it's history.
With the vise can a two sided instruction sheet, pretty standard.
Today I have contacted Tim at Nor-vise, owner of the company for the past six years or so, to ask if he recognised what I have. His initial respone was "It has some Norvise parts on it, but I have never seen anything like that in the Norvise product line."
Again, none the wiser really, I continued in my quest. There are no markings at all on the vise, but when I looked at the instruction sheet with my glasses on, top right hand side said "United States Patent#4544145 October 1985."
I looked that up and found the original patent (patentimages.storage.googleapis.com/e6/9f/f4/6da74c5b0adf97/US4544145.pdf) and some other details about the Patent registration (patents.justia.com/patent/4544145) & (patents.justia.com/inventor/norman-e-norlander).
Having read through all of the information, I was more sure than ever that what I have is indeed a vise that was made by Norman E Nordlander, prehaps a very early prototype, given the very unique design. It is certainly made very well indeed.
I emailed Tim again at Nor-Vise showing him the links as mentioned above and saying:
"All of this information leaves no doubt in my mind that this is in fact a very early vise/vice which I now think could be an early prototype made by Norman himself.
It has all of the signs of being so.
That would, indeed, explain why you have never seen anything like that in the Norvise product line before.
I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on this.
Is there anybody still around from the early days when Norman started out who may be able to shed some light on this? "
Tim has just emailed me back, his response was:
"It certinally looks that way.
I have been involved with the company since the early 2000’s not from the beginning for sure.
This could have very possibly been one of Norm’s early vises.
With he and I living on different sides of the country, we have lost touch with a lot of the old guard from when we purchased the company close to 6 years ago now."
My question to you all is, is there anybody out there who may be able to shed some more light with regards to the origin of this vise, I would be really interested to know it's full history. Anyone who worked with Norman in the early days, friends of his, etc etc etc.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who may know more.
