Fly Reel ID ... JVH?

Post by LuckyStrike »

Greetings

I purchased this nice old fly reel recently... I can not find any makers mark or even numbers stamped into it (not even on the foot)

The reel is a hefty one at 4-1/2 inches across the spool face and 2-3/8 inches wide

It was absolutely filthy when I plucked it from a bin of relics so spent a couple hours going over it and gently cleaning the surfaces. The reel is very smooth with a beautiful click . Basic model with no adjustable drag or even on/off click
It appears after cleaning that its hard rubber sideplates and nickel silver bands , foot and screws.

I tried to find an identical reel online but so far no luck ... Guessing its a Julius V Hofe or similar maker?

Would love to hear your opinion

Many Thanks and tight lines

It would help considerably to see the whole reel along with the innards if you're game.

Including a good shot of the bottom of the reel foot.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Very vom Hoffeish but I don't think Julius. Didn't Edward make a minimal number of fly/salmon reels?
I'll put my $s on EVH as the reel appears to be better "appointed" than a JVH.

I'll take some time later to dissassemble the reel and show the insides

Heres the rear plate and foot ... Thank you for your input... Truly this is a finely made reel!

I don't think the reel was made by Edward vom Hofe. He made a number of salmon fly reel models - 403, 413 Cascapedia, 423 Restigouche, 484 Col. Thompson, 496 Griswold, 504 Tobique, 552 Special Salmon and Saltwater Reel. All of them have S-handles and none that I know of have circular scribe lines around the nickle silver rims.
Here is a picture of the rims of a JvH salmon reel with similiar scribing around the rims. JvH made some high quality fly reels of hard rubber and nickle silver which rival his brother's reels.

However, LuckyStrike's reel has a knob and counter balance which I have not seen on JvH fly reels, also the circular scribe line and depression around the bearing cap is not characteristic of JvH. I believe that it is not a JvH made reel.
I would agree with BCharles that the reel is likely a Conroy or Malleson reel.

Here are pictures of the face and back plates of the JvH salmon reel. Note the differences between this reel and LuckyStrike's.

This reel is stamped Appleton & Bassett Boston on the left of the face and Julius vom Hofe Maker N.Y. on the right of the face, 4 1/4 on the foot along with the 1/8" hole.

Here are pictures of a JvH raised pillar nickle silver and hard rubber salmon reel. It has the A&F logo on the face and the JvH " football " stamp on the back.

Very cool reels, Ray .... The subtle differences certainly spell a different maker... Would you say these reels were 1890's or early 1900's production?

I have a couple other JVH's but never came across enough of them to do much of a study

Terry,
The Appleton & Bassett Co. reel dates from 1893 until 1901. The A&F reel is probably from the same time frame, perhaps a little later, but early 1900's at the latest.

The only other reel I have that is close to the one I was asking an ID for is this 4-1/4 inch JVH fly reel shown on the left

If one gets the right lighting and squints the original stamp can be seen on the face. This reel appears to be nickel plating over brass and hard rubber. Still a beautiful old fly reel and smooth as silk!

Thank you to everyone for your input
