Hi guys! Just picked up a reel that has a sticker that says Shakespeare 1990. Its painted black and actually looks like a Pflueger Skilcast and says Japan on bottom of foot. Is this a later production model that was actually made in Japan like a lot of reels of the time, or did i buy a fake? Canadian
cool-thumb jump jump Canadian USA Tony, as for my slim knowledge, they made 3 modles of the (1970) on the fg made in 1954, and the fj1952 and also a direct drive modle same date code. Let me get into the factory manuals and I looked and looked etc, I see no reel with the pfluger worm assembly like yours and NO MENTION OF IT! Now dont go out and buy a new house yet! ha ha , However you may want to add several pics front back, top back etc. may have been a conversion or a mechanics dream, I doubt if its a poto type, as none of my proto books show it! The view you show is Shakespere, the tulip handles gives that away, actualy it favors a( Great Lakes REEL) with that level wind assembly. Again More views please! we are waiting, also if you want it serviced at no charge send it to me, be worth it to see and take pics of it! Your Ohio Conection On Lake ERIE Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG
cool-thumb USA USA Tony, I have looked tru all my shakesper mauals including ones sent to me buy the company with Shakespere and Pfluger reels in them. it shows a 1990 fj listed however only part #s no pic of it, The leveal wind is definetly Pfluger, and the rest of the reel looks like a 1976 Prsident! ? I will ask some other repair shops if the have pics of parts etc, I admit it has me puzzeled at the moment, however the foot also looks pfluger, the handle is the Shakesper TULIP design, the frame is similar to the President series , I dont belive you are stuct at $7.00, the part #s cross over to shakesper gears etc however the lack of a breakdown makes it a bit hard to estiment what it realy is, unless they were playing around on the Forign market, Let me get caught up on repairs, then I can do a bit more reseach! If you decide to sell it adviseme! Your Ohio Conection On a Very rough lake Erie Col. M. lorens aka SWIM JIG
Yes the label is glued on although its coming off on 1 corner. Thats 1 of the things that was suspicious to me, but on closer inspection, i found that the label is a perfect fit and doesn't seem to have been cut out. Could this be some hybrid that was made after Shakespeare took over Pflueger? Canadian
jump Canadian USA Tony, that level wind looks like Pfluger! I have two of them in my hand a reg. Pfluger bait caster and a ROCKET REEL, both are the same lenght! Will you take some mesurments first from the reel frame, outside to outside most likly is 2&1/4 inches, now go from the outside of the level wind to the outside hump to hump should be ( should be 2&5/8ths in. The only thing that may have happend was, When Pfluger was took over with Shakespere they had a lot of parts they didnt want to throw out, 2 By building overseas , they may have wanted to keep the USA immage, Note the foot of your reel measure it is it 2&1/2 in? as both the reg pfluger and the 1355 rocket are the same (2&1/2 in. long and 1/2 in wide. Also note the foot yours looks like the pfluger( + ) wher it fastens to the cross bars! Is there a leter on the botom of the foot? like most plugers have on them? a B? Again I will do a free service on your reel so I can take measurments etc! With all my factory manuals I see no ref to this either as a production reel or expermental reel. If member FRED KERR is around he most likly could shed some imfo, as he used to work for Shakespere as their overseas sales rep. Your Ohio Conection Col. M. Lorens aka SWIM JIG
Hey Col! You're right on the money with the measurements. The line guide and pawl i've narrowed down to being the exact duplicate of those used on the Pflueger Supreme. As for the foot, there are no letters but a weird looking shape with what looks like a 2 or a question mark within that shape. As for your offer to service the reel, thankyou, but quite honestly, i haven't seen a finer reel in a long time. No scratches or dents and barely needs to be shined up, and runs super smooth, but then again, i'm no expert on reel repairs. USA Canadian
