Shakespeare 1740 Model HE Year?
Hey Everybody,
It's been a while since I've posted. Been traveling a lot for work and that's kept me away. I hope all are doing well.
I have a question. I just acquired a Tournament Freespool 1740 Model HE and was wondering what year(s) this reel is from. I've been looking for one of these reels (at a good price) for over a year now and I finally landed one. I'm pretty excited about it.
Take care,
Terry

I like the two pages Jon Kring offered. They seem pretty straight forward & less confusing, but then I've been aware for a long time that the dating code references the latest change or revision, not necessarily the year of manufacture.
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)

Re: Shakespeare 1740 Model HE Year?
Thank you Steve and Tommy!! That is a big help and I'm gonna bookmark that post!
I'm really impressed what Al Stover said with respect to the 1740:
"Another good example of this is the Shakespeare model 1740 Tournament HE. Production on this model began in 1936 and the next change was FK in 1951. For fifteen years, this reel was produced without change yet many think the reel was made in 1936, when it could have been made at any time over the fifteen year period starting in 1936."
No changes for 15 years means they got it right the first time. Now I need to find an FK to see what the difference is.
Thank you again!!!

One difference is the Model HE is marked on the tailplate while the Model FK is marked on the headplate. Also the FK shows Nickel Silver on the headplate.
Keepin' It Fun!

Colby, I thought that was a bit weird when I saw it in the picture. I'm by no means close to an expert (I'm not even a novice yet!) but most every Shakespeare reel I have seen has the "Model XY" on the head plate, like you said. Thanks for pointing this out to me!colby sorrells wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 12:50 pm One difference is the Model HE is marked on the tailplate while the Model FK is marked on the headplate.
