Help ID Maker of This Reel

Post by Teal »

Hi all,

Recently picked up a neat little (2" across) german silver and hard rubber multiplier for an upcoming "reels of the trade" article. I am sure many of the experts out in ORCAland will quickly be able to tell me who made this reel. My first thought was Montague but there is something about the foot that doesn't fit. It is marked "R3" on the foot as well in lieu of a yardage marking. Then I thought Julius Vom Hofe but there was no characteristic hole in the foot, although the foot resembles a JVH more than any of the others listed on Phil's site.

Here is a pic, if anyone needs larger photos let me know and I'll email it:

So what am I? Any help gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

Dr. Todd

Todd, I think a few early Montagues had feet like that, so don't rule them out. Doesn't look like German silver, tho, unless all those yellow things are reflections.

Todd, this was noted by Phil in a post this year:
in the 1904 Montague catalog. It was made in both the non-jeweled version (No. RC3) and a jeweled version (No. RCJ3). It would have a 60 stamped on the foot. All these signs point to that reel being made by Montague.
While this was in response to a "Johnson" marked reel, I think it's at least a possibility the R3 marking points to Montague.

It is definetely a "Monty" - early, well built little beastie with a flacky plating. About a year ago I posted an almost identical set of pics thinking I had a Malleson because of the foot and a Vom Hofe because of the high sided screw heads and at least a somethin somethin because of the collars on the pillars - turns out it is a "Monty" and it is not all that uncommon (Milt has three in different sizes) and I now have one slightly newer marked Pennell that is identical except for rounded screws and a more traditional foot screwed to the pillars.

My little Monty has the "R3" stamping on the foot, but it also has "Quadruple" very faintly stamped on the front.

Hope this helps!

Hi Steve, Jim & Len,

Thanks a bunch. Another Montague! I guess first impressions are usually right...

I appreciate the input and help. Happy turkey day to everyone.

I have a small "Kooney Kasting" I picked up from Jim Madden in Texas. It is also marked "R3" and is a Montague.
