The Inside Job at Ocean City Manufacturing Company

Post by Biggamereels1988 »

I have collected over 200 newspaper clippings related to M&H Sporting Goods and Ocean City Manufacturing. One particularly astonishing story details a group of employees from Ocean City who orchestrated a theft of parts, assembling them at home for local resale. They managed to steal over $250,000 worth of components, though they were ultimately apprehended with only $10,000 worth remaining.

This incident piqued my interest and led me to ponder how one might identify a stolen reel. Notably, Ocean City has implemented a unique feature that many reels do not possess: a medallion affixed to the front side plate. I personally attempted to remove one of these medallions and found it to be extremely difficult, nearly impossible to extract without causing damage to the plate.

This led me to another observation: I frequently encounter Ocean City reels on eBay that lack the medallion and appear never to have had one.

This raises a compelling conclusion: it is plausible that these reels are among the stolen parts?

Interesting observation! 🧐 I have a feeling you have sleuthed out some 70 year old cold case evidence. :cool :D
Love those Open Face Spinning Reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco)
