Reel Identification Help Please?

Post by Tom R »

I found this 100yd brass reel at a local tackle show not long ago and would appreciate any suggestions as to the maker and year of manufacture. Pillar to pillar, 2 1/2”; plate to plate depth 1”; height 2 1/2”. The drag is set by pushing the wedge shaped pawl behind the flat brass spring.

Hendryx, No.608P. catalogued in 1889? Everything appears typical with the exception of the foot.

Thanks Klonder! It’s difficult to see in the photos but the foot has been modified. It has been filed along the edges and rounded off at each end.

In my opinion, the reel is a Hendrick/Star reel works product. Two ORCA members have web pages on Hendrick/Star Reel Works that support this, first, Steve Vernon and his great article on the reels of Augustus Hendrick. Have a look at the drag on the Mascot reels:
https://the-fishing-reels-of-augustus-d ... reels.html

Second, Ron Gast has a copy of the 1900 Orvis catalog that shows what I believe to be your reel:

I can't say I've ever seen a Hendryx with that style foot.

Thanks for the resources Jim. I can confirm Mr Vernon’s observation regarding the poorly made braking/drag mechanism as it doesn’t operate properly in my example either!
