My wife wants to buy me a reel book for Christmas. What is the best single book for old level winds and fly reels- primarily North American? Thanks Richard

Richard,
There are several books that I find just great for a library. The first book I would recommend is Misselbach and Meisselbaach-Catucci Fishing Reels by Phil White. This will provide you indepth accurate knowledge, history, and details about one of the most collectable type reels - both baitcasters and fly reels. This hardback book may be sold out soon. Contact Phil to see if there are any left. Contact: www.oldreels.com or email: .

The next book I would suggest is written by Karl T. White. Fishing Tackle Antiques and Collectables, Vol 2. Has many photos in color. Many different mfg's. Be sure to get Vol 2 which is re reels, spoons, and spinner harnesses. There is a bookstore in Kansas that sells this book. Check the internet.

There is another great book re South Bend Reels by Jim Madden, but his book is sold out.

As Jim Cramer says: These Three Books - Best of Breed.

Hope this helps. Dale.

There are a lot of great books out there, but for a comprehensive book about fly tackle a good start is "Classic and Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle" by A. J. Campbell and John Orelle's "Fly reels of the Past". Tyler

I use all the books mentioned, but if I had to start with one, it would probably be Antique Fishing Reels by Steve Vernon.

Good point Laurie, We should also probably mention Jim Browns " A Treasury of Reels ", which is a compendium of the reels of The Americam Museum of Fly Fishing. It's a great book full of information. Tyler
