Does anyone know when Langley started putting Nylon gears in some of their reels. Does anyone know the time period the following reels where in production---Top Cast, Speedy, Gray Shorty, Gold ReelCast, Blue Streamlite. Thanks for use of the board.

Willis,

First, glad to see a fellow Langley collector. Dates (approximate) of production were:

Topcast - 1954-1957
Speedy - 1950-1954
Shorty (grey) - 1957-1959
Gold Reelcast - 1959-1962
Blue Streamlite - September 21, 1945 to late 1946

Nylon gears were introduced by Langley with the Topcast and Speedcast in 1954. They wern't much good and were replaced with metal gears a couple of years hence.

My next article in the REEL NEWS covers all of the "Series 500" Langley baitcasters, so stay tuned

Willis,
Hope this doesn't mean that you're not a Talbot collector anymore? I was going to bring a different one to show you at Bartlesville. Need I bother?

:D :) 8) :!: :?:   cool-thumb jump jump Canadian USA acording to my november 1955 repair manual, they offered the replacement gears in a matching set for the great sum of 50 cents! (note in changing gears make certain to change in compleat sets. (Parts 486-488-491 are sold in sets for 50cents per set replacing nylon gears) page 9 of the repair manual dated 11-55 page 9 My thoughts the aluminum gears were not a great inprovement as they after water got on them and for certain when salt water go on them turned to a white powder! I always use brass gears when I can, then the problem is truly fixed! hope this dating is of help! Your Ohio conection On Lake ERIE ,Col. Milton lorens aka SWIM JIG a ps to this manual it says! always order by service # do not use letter!
