Can't figure the bidding. Why did he bid himself up from 660?

the $660 did not meet the reserve, which was obviously $800.

I think that's his third contiguous listing, and he finally met reserve.

I'm sure it's a nice reel, but $800 ?

Its very simple, basic math my good friends.

Take a $200 reel, put it in a $200 box and you have an $800 package.

Makes sense to me.

Than again, I got a D- in math.

Pflueger Medalist on Ebay

Post by Lillawill »

Dear All

I guess we have all bid more than an item was worth just to get it. I learned my lesson on proxy bids on one reel. I put a high bid in to insure I would win the reel and another fellow did the same thing. Unfortunately I won. Now I bid what I am willing to pay. However there has been lots of times I wished I had bid more. I guess we can't get them all.

I like Dean's logic. I'm going to feel a lot better about putting some line on my 1494 and catching a passel of trout this summer. It does have a sweeter click than the later ones without the line guide, but it looks pretty much the same inside.

I issue the caveat that I don't follow the medalist as closely as I use to and therefore don't hold myself out as an expert on value. However, I know that the older models became a "hot item" starting about 4 or 5 years ago when Japanese buyers became interested, and prices haven't softened a lot. Obviously, condition is extremely important. It's not common to find one in Ex+ conditiion (I can't break the habit of using nflcc grading designations). Have you ever seen a reel graded at 9+? I don't think I've ever seen that.

I pretty much agree with Dean's values individually, but by putting together a nice combination, the seller enhanced overall value. I would proably value this combo at around 500--600 if I owned it, primarily because of the maroon box. And I'm assuming the reel has no wear. It's hard to tell for certain from the pics. The 800 paid for this combo is surprising but not shocking (to me).

Perhaps all of the 'pflueger guys" on board would like to guess at what the reel that Harvey linked will eventually sell for. The "green box" is much more common than the maroon (for a medalist). I will therefore guess $275.00 to 300.00.

When will I learn to just "shut up" :)

prewar 1492's in almost any shape have been going for $300 on ebay for several months. A near-perfect 1494 is a better reel.

Well, I threw in a bid just for grins and all you guys sat back. Now I own the other $800 reel for $179. Wonder if the guy who bought the one for $800 wants a pair?

Ha! I think someone is seriously missing something here (and it's likely me)! If it were a saltwater reel, I'd have bit for the box. Nice combo Tom :D

that one is a little different because it has the solid strip arbor while the 1930 reel (2nd year of mfg.) has sculpted pillars for the arbor that match the outside frame pillars.

I think you got a good deal.

let's talk trade
