I bought an old tackle box today, in it were three Arrow raised pillar reels, one of them was in an old Penn box.
The box is dark red, with a paper label on one end. On it it says something like:
The United States Reel, PENN. Then it gives a patent number which I was able to find the patent for it in 1923.
The patent was granted to a guy in Michigan for a levelwind.
The box would hold a small levelwind freshwater baitcasting reel.
How rare are these boxes? How hard is it to find the reel that would go in it?
I don't have a picture at present, but could post one if needed.
Thanks, Jeff

A green U.S. Penn box is described in Stu Lawson's column in Reel News, Jan., 2005, pg. 17. He mentions that the box is marked with pat. no. 1,461,586, a level-wind patent held by Wm. Schmid, so the reel would appear to be a Bronson.

There were articles about the United States reels in three consecutive issues of the Reel News. The one mentioned above started it, January 2005, and then followups with information from Ed Corwin and Skip Brooks/Jim Garrett. The March issue contains photos of 5 different variations of US reels, including 3 variations of the Penn reel box.
United states
After much digging I discovered who sold reels using the United States trade name. Sorry, but you will have to wait for a future "reels of the trade" column to finally solve this mystery!
Cheers,
Dr. Todd
