Orvis Multiplier 3/4 wt reel

Post by Leo de »

A friend of mine told me about this forum and I am glad he did. What a wealth of information and sharing that goes on here.

I have an old fly reel that is in excellent condition and I am trying to assess the value of it. It was traded to me as a partial payment for a rod I restored, and it is a really sweet little reel. I have no idea when Orvis quit making it, but this one operates like new. It is a 3/4 wt Multiplier that appears to turn the spool 1.5 times per handle revolution. It has an extra spool and what appears to be the original case for the reel. I know that someone on this board is bound to be familiar with it and can give me a general idea of its value, or even if it has any value! Here are a couple of pictures of the reel, spool and carrying case. Thank you in advance for any information that you may be able to share.

Leo,

I wouldn't consider that to be an "old reel". I doubt if it is more than 20 years old. I will have to check my catalogs and see if I can find out the years that it was made.

These reels appeared in the 1994 and 1995 catalogs. Price was $145 in 1994. They appear to have been replaced with a somewhat different design in 1996.

the reel was made by BFR, who just discontinued UK manufacture of the Battenkills last year.

The Made in England BFR reels are expected to hold their value - Orvis has moved all reel production to Asia.
