Anyone that would like to sell me the 1st, 2nd and 3th edition of the Fishing Tackle Digest ? Would these be 1951/1952/1953 ?
I have the 4th edition from 1954, found it very interesting and containing
lots of information on all sorts of reels and lures (and who was making, selling and distributing them).
It's the Fishing Tackle Digest Edited by Charles R.Jacobs
Associate editor Wally Wight
A Paul, Richmond Book,
Crown Publischers, Inc. - New York
If someone would like details from the 4th edition, just mail me
and I'll scan whatever you're looking for, just name the reel or brandname you're looking for.

There is also another publication called the "Fishermen's Digest" which sounds to be a similar type of book. I have a "Sixth Anniversary Deluxe Edition" which was published by The Gun Digest Co. of Chicago, Illinois in 1966. I am not sure when the first one or last one was published but they are very interesting to read with a wealth of information including sections on the various current reels & rods. Randy
fishing digest - 1947
Jean-Paul:
I have a copy of the 1st edition- the Digest is titled for 1947, but the publication date is 1946 (month not specified). If there's something you're looking for let me know and I'll scan it for you. All the references in the copy are for the 1947 season, but the information is for items introduced or reintroduced in 1946. BTW, as good a reference as this is, it isn't by any means comprehensive; like many of this sort of publication, it relied largely on information supplied by manufacturers, and many apparently did not respond and are not listed.
Best,
Pete

Hi,
Thanks, no need to make scans but sure thanks for the offer.
I was just wondering if the following spinning reel were mentioned in the first issue (they were mentioned in the 4th) :
- monti / monti-super (swiss)
- pecos luxe (french)
- olympic deluxe (probably japanese copy of Mitchell 300)
- Spin-In Royal 585 (this is actually made by Agal/Italy)
There's probably a lot more intresting facts in in, but I'll try to buy one sometime. I do realize the information isn't always trustworthy, but for some reels these digest are the only source for dating etc.
Another source are fishing magazines, over the last years I have been buying lots and lots of these, dating from the early 1930's till 1960's. Cost me a fortune just to date a few reels or find the distributor...
I was lucky enough to trade them for a few reels later on. Now these were Dutch/Belgian magazines... Still looking for other countries magazines but that just to expensive, these things weigh tons to send by mail. So, for now I'm concentrating on tackle digests and whatever I can find. But I'm pretty sure there's loads of information still to be found in e.g. "foreign" magazines (with "foreign" magazines I mean from countries like Switserland, Germany and others that have a history in reel making).
Oops, ones I start typing...

FISHING DIGESTS
Jean-Paul:
I'll check and see if any of these brands are mentioned, but none of them are ringing a bell - this digest is almost exclusively of American manufacturers.

FISHING DIGEST
Good Afternoon, Jean-Paul:
I checked my copy of the Fishing Digest and my memory, for once, was right- the only spinning reels listed are the Luxor A-3 (pictured) and the Mastereel (listed but not shown). The text section on spinning mentions English and French reels as being available, but does not list any by name. The only American reels listed are the Bache-Brown and the Haywood. The only fly reels listed are the Hardys, with a note that production had not fully resumed and that models and availability were not certain at the time of publication. Hope this answers your question- I don't think that this first edition is going to help you much, but it's still a good reference for most American manufacturers.
Best,
Pete

Are you aware that there in fact is a book about the french reel production through the year. 1 ed. (6-8 years ago) was only in french (your name indicate you might handle that?) but I think that the second ed. (1-2 years ago) is with english sub-text as well. Unfortunately I don't have the info here on the job, but despite my 50+ years I recall that the writers name is Caminade - and if i'm not completely wrong his wife was a active part on the writing too. Give me a word on and I'll mail the info to you.

ps: A year or two ago a italian book on local reels was issued too, I might be able to find this info too (but due to it was written in italian - i never ordred it.

Hi,
Thanks to all for your help and tips.
I think I have the French book you are referring to, and I also have the Italian book.
But I am looking for the 2nd edition of the Italian one (actually more an limited edition update of the 1st). If anyone has one for sale ? I tried with the Italian author but they were sold out, the 1st however is still available it seems.
About the French book, the last years a number of very interesting and extremely detailed books have appeared there, all of them handling the history and all the different reels made by the referred to companies.
These are all in French but even then very interesting if you can't read French. I read and speak French, Dutch, English and a little German. But if it's about spinning reels I'd learn Chinese if needed
The French books (for those who would like to order them) :
1) “Les Moulinets Mepps” by Laurent Quichaud en Jean-Noël Bohn
ISBN 2-91284-836-9 , 104 pages, edition jan. 2005 about Mepps spinning reels
2) “Les Moulinets Ru-Mer, Ru et Alder” by Gilles Ollivier
ISBN 2-91284-862-8, 172 pages editied nov. 2005
about RU and Alder spinning reels
3) “Les Bamistes Les Moulinets Peerless-Bam” by Thierry Mazoyer
ISBN 2-91284-844-X, 110 pages, edited jan. 2005, about BAM and BAM-Peerless spinning reels
4) “Le grand livre des moulinets Français” by Bernard and Michèle Caminade ISBN 2-92184-848-2, 164 pages, 3 th ed. dec. 2004
handling all French spinning reels
5) “Les Moulinets LUXOR” by Jean-Noël Bohn and Philippe Sossong
ISBN 2-921848-10-5, 153 pages, ed in june 2000, about Luxor spinning reels and a few words on Crack
6) “Les cannes à Pêche de collection”, 213 pages, pocket-size, about splitcane rods, very detailed and extensive, not only French made rods ! ISBN 2-9509929-7-8
7) “Leurres de Pêche”, 146 pages, contains copies of advertisements on French lures sold between 1893 and 1960, ISBN 2-91284-866-0
