I think I am going to list one soon on ebay... I am wondering about setting a reserve on it; and how much.

As I don't have a full time job anymore I need to get as much out of it as I can...

El...show us what you have...maybe we can save you the trouble! Re reserves, if it's a keeper, it will go as big without the reserve, if not bigger.

Here it is:Image

It has two small flaws... a little mar on the faceplate at about the 7 o'clock position just past that last screw, maybe could be minimized with polishing... and looks like a hole was drilled (just one tiny one) on the foot... I don't think that was factory, there is slight wear/corrosion or what almost looks like about a fingerprints worth of bronzing right there on the bottom of the foot. I also now see the initials CFA very small and carefully engraved on the foot as well... The spool is CLEAN and shines like a new dime, click strong...

Let me know if we want views of any of that...[/img]

Yes it is a 9/0. Spool clean and click strong. Only problems I can see are the two I listed (tiny bit of oxidation/corrosion around the one tiny hole in foot and the one "chatter" mark on the face plate at 7 oclock. Maybe a few tiny flecks, tiny chips or scratches at edge here and there (most of the rims are pretty sharp and clean but there are a few places- it obviously was used)... it isn't MIB. But its pretty darnd good... has list of about four pattents and "more applied for" on the back plate...

I think I am going to list it on ebay here shortly. I don't plan to put a buy it now on there. If anyone IS interested they should email or call post haste before it makes a reserve, I might could be talked into pulling it for the right price.

Ok if you were thinking of bidding it here is a reminder, only a bit over a day left on it.

Now I don't plan to give it away so consider what market prices are for clean Atlapacs and make that reserve price. Still a great bargan at that...

Thanks to all that have looked...

market price ???????

Post by m3040c »

What is the market price for this reel? I like it and I am the high bidder but I have not reached your reserve at my $350.00 bid. I guess I am way off.

A lot of people (me included) do not bid on items with a reserve. I am willing to get in a bidding war with another buyer for something I want, but will not get in a bidding war with a greedy seller. If the point was to actually sell the reel, the highest bidder would be the one person in the world willing to pay more than anyone else at the close of auction without needing to have their arm twisted by a sellers greed. On the penalty side of this, if reserve is not met the seller still has to pay fees to EBAY...maybe they will learn not to put a reserve on stuff next time.

I don't understand that approach and I don't see how anyone's arm is being twisted:?: But I do think it is quite wrong to say that greed is what motivates all sellers to establish a reserve on items they sell. If a seller, especially one that collects more than sells, is offering something they bought at a value they thought was reasonable (or slightly more, like I often do  ), they should be entitled to ask for what they think it's worth. If they don't wish to sell it for less and no one buys it, that's the harsh reality. I can't see how putting something up with a reserve is any different than putting up something with any minimum bid over 1 cent - it's what they want to sell it for.

We all know that prices fluctuate regularly from one day to the next on collectibles that we buy. That is why whenever someone asks for an opinion on value, most will give a range and even point out what the conditions are that may make it more or less. If it's only worth what someone is willing to pay at that moment, the right buyers may come along at a later time. There are lots of people who have sold things right here on this board for prices they are satisfied with.

Now, when someone comes here asking for a value or for information on the reel they have and then turns around and cuts off someone offering to buy it with "I'd rather not sell this to you, person that is offering to buy it, because I can sell it on ebay for the 'real' value", that seems more to me like they are "motivated' (maybe by something) and interested in getting the most for their item.

Greed has nothing to do with a proper reserve. Just can't see selling at auction for less than I have into a reel. In that case I would rather keep the item myself. Some of us are NOT professional sellers and are not buying items at rock bottom prices just to list on ebay. This particular reel is in my own collection and it is only due to lack of job that I am letting a few things go.
If you are looking to buy an item at a super low price just to resell it later at a profit this reel is not for you. If I had a store no one would complain about me putting a price on merchandise, nor would they expect to buy it at less than it is marked. Most auctions that ORCA or NFLCC hold at meets give the seller the right of refusal after bidding has stopped... ebay hasn't got that feature sooooo I am using the reserve to protect my investment in the reel. Sorry that rubs you the wrong way but I can't afford to give it away.

I should just keep my mouth shut...oh, right...like that's going to happen :D

This thread should go to the top with the Paypal thread...we have all the elements of the auction wars stated here!...except for one obvious one...which is to make the opening bid the price you can live with, El...then there are no mysteries about what you need to get and if it's a good price by today's standards, it will sell...if not, then it wouldn't sell, regardless...at this time. You'll have to pay a few more shekels to ebay for that bigger opening bid, but i doubt it's much difference...maybe less..than what you have to pay for the reserve. Kinda what i hinted at in the beginning...good price and it would have sold here before hitting ebay.

Okay, John...hit "delete" and save yourself some grief...nah

Yep John, my whole point in mentioning it here was in hopes someone would make me a nice offer on it and we could all avoid ebay. However no one did so to expose it to more buyers (I have a feeling a few reel regulars on ebay don't brouse the ORCA pages... and there are more ready buyers there than here) I waited a short bit of time then I listed...

This flap about reserves... well it's the first time I have seen anyone say as much. His own business if he doesn't want to bid stuff with a reserve, though I imagine it cuts out a good number of ebay listings. I just can't take that sort of selling risk. I am sure most sellers wouldn't be selling for long (or without reserves) if they sold their things at a loss...

I simply can't afford to give this reel away. Once upon a time I could and did give away a number of reels that were of pretty high value... that I had paid a fair amount for at least. Just not in a position to do that right now.

Now this reel may not sell... But I just can't see anyone begrudging a seller what they have in something. If I end up keeping it well that's fine by me. But I just don't see anyone selling their reels anywhere for a loss...

And btw I HAVE seen sellers get bad-mouthed for putting what they wanted as the starting price too. I just didn't bid if I thought it was too high but some seem to feel the need to do more...

I really do not understand somebody having a problem with a reserve. If they want to put a reserve on their reels or lures. It is their property and have every right to set the lowest price they will take for it. High or low it is their choice. Right or wrong. From what is my experience as a proud member of the bottom feeders association. Reserves are a bit hard for me as not having a large pay check on disability. I probably will not be able to add a nice reel to my collection. But I just move on and do not get mad. And hope I come across another one in my price range. That people missed on ebay. As long as I have been collecting I know you miss more then you win. But it just makes the ones you win all the more sweeter. And besides if they think the reserve to high. Then let them go out and find one like it for less. Then they can tell everybody how they picked up a great reel at half the price.

Well, El...at great risk of you coming out here and field dressing me...we still don't have much of a clue as to what that magic dollar amount is! the auction died at 400 without meeting reserve...if your number was 450, then you probably could have sold the reel, either here or on the auction if the bidders/buyers knew what was up. If it's a lot higher than that, then the results pretty well indicate the market won't support it right now...and lots of us are sitting on things like that so we feel your pain! hope it all works out well!

hello--------a fun auction anyway

Post by m3040c »

Hello El,

Well I tried. I had it up to $353 and I don't care about your reserve or your decision to use one. Using a reserve is just the way you picked to market your item. There are many ways and the only way to know which one is right is to sell at the price you want. I am looking for a center piece for my not so high end collection of mostly Penn reels. Your reel was a beauty but I was looking at some Vom Hofe's and although the VH's are not 9/0"s they are interesting to me and in my range, so I got off your auction at the high end of the price range I am shopping in. The entire Ebay market is a bit soft right now, so its time to get a deal, not suppliment your income with your prized possessions. I wish you luck at finding a job and keeping those beautiful reels that I am sure you worked very hard to find.

My best to you and yours----Mike

Yeah, I wasn't mad or trying to downplay the fact that it is a nice reel...I was just relaying that myself and many others do not bid on auctions with reserves. Rather than having an auction start at $5.00 with a $600 reserve, it makes way more sense to have a buy-it-now price or starting bid of $600 so buyer knows what they are getting into.

I have watched the EBAY thing as a seller and a buyer for long enough to know that auctions without reserves have far outperformed auctions with reserves. The only reserve auctions that have outperformed were on flawless reels.

This is going to be a difficult thread. Everyone has their own opinions about buying and selling on ebay. I have to agree with el on this one. She put the reel here letting everyone know she was selling the reel before she put it on ebay. Anyone who was interested had the opportunity to negotiate a deal prior to ebay. I do not believe there was greed involved anywhere. I have sold many reels on ebay. I sometimes use a reserve myself. The reason I use a reserve is a protection of investment. If the reel does not make the reserve I would rather not sell the reel at that time. Not all people use reserves on their items with greedy intentions. I think that I want to sell the reel now but I do not want to take less than X amount of money for the reel. So I set the reserve for the least amount I will take for the reel. Of the many reels I used reserves on, only a couple did not meet the reserve. Many FAR exceeded the reserve. In probably 95% of the time a reserve was really not needed because the selling price did exceed the reserve. I used it anyway just as a protective measure. It may have cost me a little more with eaby fees but that was alright with me as a way to protect the investment. From day to day you never know what is going to happen on ebay.

As far as using a "Buy it now". I NEVER use a buy it now. My reasoning is that the price the item sells for many times exceeds what I would have set for a buy it now. By using a buy it now you have already set the maximum the reel will go for. You are not leaving yourself open for many people who may have paid more for the item.

Many people use vaious ebay selling options for various reasons. Not all have to do with greed.

Hope things get better for you el! Was a pleasure meeting you at Lake George!
