make the handle part!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:D :) 8) :!: :?:  :type: jump yay-banana jump usa Harvy, it looks as if the original was a wood handle that went on the shaft! If so go to yournearest Pat Catan hobby and craft store or any habby shop and buy you a lenght of bass wood 1 in square, next look at a like reel , get someone to chuck up the wood and turn it to its tulip pattern or what ever the original looked like, if you dont have a patern use a picture, once you get it turned, have the person split it ie cut longways, onace this is done put the 2 halves around the shaft, use some 5 min epoxey glue, and set it on the shaft, after its dryed sand with #600 sand paper, wipe of the dust and paint it black with a fast drying lacquer the hobby shop will have that too! If the original was a IVORY or Plastic Ivory, do the same thing however donot stain it Black. or Brown or other colors. When Done Properly its next to imposible to tell it was a new made part. Thanks for the instructions Milt but we don't do that. I need a replacement Handle that is like an original. I would never buy a race horse with a wooden leg and I might want to sell or trade this reel some day.

no differance!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:) 8) :!: :?:  :type: jump usa , Harvy how do you think they made them in the first place? only differance was they made the whole handle, and drilled a hole thru it then put the metal handle shaft with the wood or other materal thru the actual handle and rivited it to the horizonal part of the handle! You may well find a reel thats clobered and a good compleate handle as you are generaly luckly with your finds, however if after 5 to 10 years you dont find one the you will need to make it, before the fish die of old age! ha ha Your Ohio Conection on a rough lake Erie Col. Milt,
How do you get the "hole" in the wood. OR, Do you just compress by force the wood around the metal shaft?
Thanks.
Dale.

Thanks John! You only muddy up the water. Your's would work fine except I don't have the peening punch to re-attach the shaft back to the handle.
And Milt, How do I make that wooden leg for that horse?

Harvey,
If you may someday wish to sell or trade this reel then get the right handle. The one on it looks a lot like a Shakespeare, not Montague.

ONE MORE TIME!!

Post by SWIM JIG »

:) :? 8) :!: :?:  cool-thumb :type: jump jump usa Mow that John has showed you how to make the handle with the hole tru it, I will explain one more time how to get it in the handle shaft without a peening punch! ( You sloit the wooden or Plastic Or Ivory handle part, if its wood , you use 5 min. epoxy on the inside of the part tha goes on the shaft, after its hardened the metal will not wear out or oblong the the wooden handle, next put a coat of epoxy on the edges of the 2 pice handle and then set it on the metal part of the handle , hold in place withnylon ty straps about 4 of them will work, once the epoxy is set, take the tys off , sand off the surplus glue, stain with the color you want, and after 2-3 days place a coat of past wax on the outside material to keep it protected! I say a big thanks to John for showing how to get the holes in the material, we all can learn from each other if we open our thoughts! Harvy , there are many handles on old reels that are NEW MADE! After all Who is going to run a carbon 90 test on them? Is it Fraud? Not likly as if you look in some older catalogs they advertised parts for sale and they custom made these parts for other reel companies, and to this day , makers of these items still make knobs for the furnature industry, Most all AMISH cabinate builders buy from these companies! Anyone having handles without knobs, dont throw them out, sell or trade them to me! Your Ohio Conection On Lake ERIE COL> MILTON LORENS aka SWIM JIG

Okay...so here's my version of that reel...assuming MY handle hasn't been changed out, looks like plastic/ivoroid will do the trick and be original...Harv, my guess is that the material in yours probably wasn't molded well and plastic degraded..I've certainly seen a lot of cases like that, so you wouldn't have to have rough treatment to have that outcome. I'm also assuming that you folks with foot fetishes can probably ID the maker pretty fast 80 yds...wild guess..Montegue? :D

*note added in proof: I see my reel has knurled edge on the tailstock, but does not have the "braiding" mark around the headplate, like Harv's...different year, I suppose?

Here is another style handle on a Montague Quadruple. Looks like they used any handle they had laying around that day.

I am so CONFUSED! (and what else is new?)

Now I am being told that I need a Pflueger handle for it. Here are some better pictures of various points that should give someone an idea as to who made it. It is not like John's or Merv's who think (or know) their's is a Montegue.

Lord, I hope it isn't a Flu-Ger! That is a four letter word around this house. Just tell me, is it a silk purse or a sow's ear?
thanks for all the help.
"H"
PS: It might be for sale for $100,000.00 if it is a 'Flu-Ger"

To bring everyone up to speed, first I am ashamed of myself. I should have noticed the handle in the original photo above. The square hole is 45 degrees off what other manufacturers use on their handles. ONLY Pflueger does that.
In the meantime I sent Harvey photos of several different Quadruples. In among them was a Pflueger the same as his only a slightly larger size.
Harvey, my offer is still open, I will replace your knob with an EXACT replacement if you send me the handle.

Unfortunately, Harvey, the foot design does make it look very much like an unmarked Pflueger to me!

Don,
Thanks for the info on the 45 deg square hole alignment. Didn't know this was Pflueger specific. Hellps one get the correct handles on Pfluegers.

Thanks Brian. I guess I will have to keep it out on the porch so it doesn't start an war whithin the ranks of my Shakespeare's. The mumbling and grumbling gets rather loud at night when there is an outlaw in the house.
