Penn Senator 1/0

Post by Araye50 »

Fishing has been lousy, but reel collecting has had a definite uptick. Just 3 weeks after acquiring the early Senator 9/0 I came across the first Senator 1/0 I've ever seen in my price range, at a flea market this weekend. The fellow asked for $25, I asked if it was a $20 4th of July Special & the deal was done! Not perfect chrome to be sure, but somebody had cleaned it up fairly well & it was 100% mechanically.

Curious if anyone knows what years Penn made the 1/0. Know they went at least until '73, but no idea when they were introduced. Guess this 1/0 is a mid 60's, it has the stippled faceplate & bright green marblized 'lollipop' knob.

Also got a good lead on an old 14/0. The fellow definitely has one along with several other vintage Penns, but has not decided what he'll do with them. Will follow up later after leaving my name/number.

Guess I've acquired the easy Senators 1/0, 2/0, 3/0/ 4/0, 6/0, 9/0 now the tough ones, especially finding early examples. Anyone got a really ugly, old, neglected 10/0 or 12/0 in dire need of rehabilitation?

It's not neglected, jump however a Penn 16/0 in it's orig. box, bought from a dealer more than 50 years ago, used for heavy tuna fishing in scandinavian waters (have photos of a 500 pounder, the man and his reel) still in good shape.

Nahhhh - guess 3-4000 miles is too far away - but pop in have a look if you ever are in Scandinavia !

The Penn 1/0 first appeared in catalog #10 and continued to be listed up to around 1983. I believe catalog #10 is from the early 1940's.

Wow, $20 for a 1/0. that is a great deal. I am looking at one this morning and the seller is asking $70. They have been averaging on Ebay, in nice condition for over $100.

I can't wait to hear what you pay for the 16/0...

Well I bought it. My 1/0 has the stippled sideplate with the white handle. It is a nice clean reel that has new foot, drags, cleaning and lube. Sure wish I could have got it for $20. I had to pay $70 or walk, I paid. Can't take it with you, you know.

Anyways, here's a question about the little big game reel. When did Penn change from the stippled side plate to a flat style :?:

I am also toying with the idea of a big game collection but I do not want it to be all Penn. What I am trying to do is get every size but each size from a different manufacturer. So far I have a 1/0 Penn, a 6/0 Julius Vom Hofe and a 9/0 Ocean City. Next is whatever comes along first.

My daddy always told me, "it has to be hard, to be good". :P
