Hello

I am new to this board. I started collection Penn reels in 1972 at the tender age of twelve when I got my first Penn long beach. I still have the reel and it is in working order. Most of my reels are Penn that I use for fishing. I have a couple that I have collected for show. I have a question or two for those that don’t mind. First I did use the search function to find the answer to my question. No luck. Here is the question

1). Does any have a picture of very early Penn long beach. I an curious about the wood handle shape.

2) I was curious about the Penn 15. Did it have a name and generally what years did Penn sell them.

Thanks for the help.

Hey, Glad to see you made it over to this board from Stripers On Line. I vaguely recall a discussion on the Long Beach a while ago but maybe not. Do a quick search of the message board and then check out the ORCA Library listings here: http://orcaonline.org/images/pixel.gif ... rypage.htm

I checked my catalogs for the No. 15 reel. It is listed in catalogs #7 through #9. I don't have catalogs earlier than that so I don't know when it first appeared. It didn't appear to have a name.

Thanks to thoes who replied.

I was asking about the Long beach becouse I saw one with a wierd looking handle at auction. I pretty well convinsed that the handle was home made. It did not look like the wood handles I see on my Penn 14 or 85. I did see a Penn 113 at auction that had the older style wood handle. The reel was very corroded. I let it be.

You were asking about early Senators. This is a 9/0 that is just marked "Penn Fishing Tackle Mfg. Senator Patented Philadelphia Pa" It does not have any relief or image on the tail plate. Probably later than the wood, bicycle knob crank handle version.

I received the Penn 15 that I won at auction today. Very interesting reel in regards to its free spool mechanism. The Handle is pulled out to disengage the spool from the drive cog. A spring loaded ball in the handle shaft holds it in position until you want to reengage the drive cog of the reel. A second indention on the shaft holds it in the driven position.

I wish I had a camera. The reel only had a little corrosion on the cross bars. The handle that I thought was wood was really bake light but looks like the wood handle on other Penn reels I have. It has a nickel plated metal spool that is very shinny.

The Penn 15 will make a fine addition to my collection.
