Jim Heddon Favourite

Post by tackler »

I'm offered a very nice "Jim Heddon Favourite" bamboo rod in it's (orig?) red/brownish) leather-like (plastic) cover (with a alu-tube inside) all in super condition (hardly used) Can anyone guide me a bit on the pricelevel for such an item?

The rod you've been offered probably dates from the late 40's - if it has a black Tenite (plastic) reel seat. It was available in a couple of different lengths and actions - a very nice rod for collection or use; it was near the top of the Heddon line. Value is probably about $125-150 USD in the condiition you describe.

Fly Rod Value

Post by Jack Bright »

Tackler--In the states, in fly rods, shorter IS better, a 9foot rod valued at
$200, would be about half the value of same rod in a 7 foot size ($400)
hope that helps.---Jack

Jack's response brings up a very valid point - he sees it as a fly rod and I see it as a baitcaster - which is it?

I see the problem, sorry I did'nt know that this model could be a fly rod - so heres the facts, direct from the rod which I have for inspection here:

5' bamboo baitcaster - a similar to the Pal models - guides are black, so is the handle (but still some sort of metal) - with dark wood. The cane rod is marked:

Heddon
Jim Heddons Favorite
#851 - 5' M

I have a Heddon Catalog 1953 - showing the type, and 851 must be the model, 5 foot Medium - it was also available in 5½ and 6 feet - all length in extra light, light and medium action. (Retail $ 25.-)

The items shows very little use, and are in very good shape - and I would still appreciate a rough estimate on the price level based on the above.

Again thanks and rgds

I guessed right! That's one in a row :D ! Value estimate in my first post is in the ballpark- don't have my references here so that value ($125-150 USD) is from memory, and that ain't too reliable sometimes, but I think it's about right.

The Tenite reel seat started in the late 30's on the straight handle rods(it's that way in the '36 catalog), but I don't know if the material was changed later on. The model 851 is an offset, detachable handle, yes? The model 850 is the straight handle version, I think. The offset handles were cast aluminum, painted black. Either way, a very nice piece (although I'm partial to the straight handles, myself).

Jim's favorite was the top Heddon casting rod. Bill Stanley's favorite was the next-to-the-top Heddon fly rod.
