Do they go together??????????????

Post by m3040c »

Here is a vintage box and reel from United States Penn. How do you guys feel about this reel? Do you think it goes with the box and do you think it has anything to do with Otto Henze and the Penn Reel Company of later years. I searched the patent number on the box and it dates to a July 10, 1923 grant date.

The date refers to Wm. Schmid's level wind patent for Bronson.

Bronson

Thank you Steve for the reply. How does that relate to the box and reel in question? The brand name on the box says, United States Penn. Is this a trade reel of Bronson Reels?

Stu Lawson described a reel in The Reel News, Jan., 2005, that he said "matched" his green U.S. Penn box, but it didn't look exactly like this eBay reel. Stu mentioned "dual green painted wooden handles," and it looks as if Stu's reel had a metal headcap, not black plastic. But if Bronson was making trade reels for someone to sell under that name, who knows how many different versions might have been the "right" reel? Maybe each model went into a different colored box.

Interesting.

Sure, the marketing agenda was to sell as many reels as possible. I guess anything is possible, after all, the end result is only to put the product into the hands of the consumer no matter how it was packaged or dressed up. The market for fishing reels is world wide and I guess to know every individual presentation angle of a particular company is impossible. It is interesting to try and figure them out though.

The March 2005 issue of the Reel News also has more photos and information about the U. S. Reels. However, if someone knows who marketed these reels, they have not shared the information yet.

Agree it is a Bronson. Have had a reel just like it for several years. Dosn't have a name or mark anywhere, but after watching for ID so long, I believe the reel is a Bronson Altoona.

Several have been on auction over the past few yrs. My recollection is that reel came in a black box with white lettering. Not positive, but I think the box was marked as a Bronson Altoona 4200.

Hope this helps.
