Martin-Bretton 804SR F/S (OK, reduced price!)

Post by JoeW »

First attempt at a pic post here! Forgive my mistakes. I'm actually actually an old timer collecting lures (older stuff only), NFLCC since the gazette was printed on brown paper!, with a small "accumulation" of some nice old brass reels. Anyhow, from time to time, I run into some old reels that I do want to pass along. Hope this is the place. I've visited here, but this is my first try at posting.

Pic, if it shows up, is of a Martin-Bretton 804SR. made in France. Well-made, smooth running, beautiful spin reel. Very minor use, EX condition! 1997 Lawson's has some other models at $65, so how about $45 (now $35!) shipped. Emails, please. Thanks for the look and hope to hear from you! Best---- JoeW

PS- What a nice friendly board this is! Still like the old lures, though. LOL!

Bretton 804SR

Post by FSREPAIR »

Before anyone jumps to any wrong conclusions about where the Shakespeare 2062 was made here are some facts:

1. The first 2062 EG came out in 1964 and was made in US by Shakespeare.

2. Bretton 804SR is a French reel which came out in 1971.

3. Looks can be deceiving so one should not assume the origin of any reel based on outward appearance.

Well, my swan dive off the cliff of wrong conclusions at least generated some information - thanks, Randy!

Some interesting bits and bytes on Bretton...
Their first model was the 602 (straight foot) introduced in 1952.
Later models 804 (1956), 400 (1959), 804S (1970) and 804 SR(1971) had a curved foot.

Besides the curving of the foot the rest of the body looked the same for all these reels (they did have different medallions/colourings/etc).

Now.. the Italians always assumed the Bretton 602 was a copy of their Zangi model. Some French collectors say there was some sort of joint-venture between Bretton (located in Cluses/France) and Zangi (Torino/Italy). There is not much distance between Cluses and Torina b.t.w., just cross the Alpes...

Very interesting is a patent granted in PARIS/FRANCE on may 5th 1952 (!) number 47473, patent granted to Aldo Genero and Carlo Bolle, 2 Italians ! The patent is about the body-design and the drawing shows a reel identical to the Zangi models (or Bretton models...).

First possib. : Zangi patented it's design in France to protect their models..., but why would Bretton wait 4 years to change the reelfoot design, or was the anti-revers button on top of the body different enough ?

Second possib.: Zangi patented the design and had Bretton pay to use it ?

Third possib. : Bretton had patented the design ?

Fourth possib. : someone else patented the design ?

Another fact : Zangi was taken over by Coptes in 1971, about the same period Bretton designed it's last 804 models (they did continue the produce and sell them for a few years longer).
